Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin
Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, also known as KNM Berlin, is a music ensemble for contemporary music based in Berlin, Germany. The ensemble was founded in 1988 in East Berlin, by students of the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler". The players collaborated with composers such as Mark Andre, Georg Katzer, Chris Newman, Helmut Oehring, Dieter Schnebel and conductor Roland Kluttig. They are described as "a group which combines openness to the experimental music tradition with a high level of playing in the conventional mode." East Berlin
East Berlin was the ''de facto'' capital city of East Germany from 1949 to 1990. Formally, it was the Soviet sector of Berlin, established in 1945. Mark Andre
Mark Andre (born 10 May 1964) is a French composer living in Germany. He was known as "Marc André," his birth name, until 2007, when he formally revised the spelling. He lives in Berlin. Andre's compositions ''durch'' (2006), ''...auf... III'' (2007), and ''Wunderzaichen'' (2014) received multiple votes in a 2017 ''Classic Voice'' poll of the greatest works of art music since 2000. Georg Katzer
Georg Katzer (; 10 January 1935 – 7 May 2019) was a German composer and teacher. The last master student of Hanns Eisler, he composed music in many genres, including works for the stage. Katzer was one of the pioneers of electronic new music in the German Democratic Republic and the founder of the first electronic-music studio in the GDR. He held leading positions in music organisations, first in the East ( Akademie der Künste der DDR), then in the united Germany ( Academy of Arts, Berlin, and Deutscher Musikrat), and received many awards, including the Art Prize of the German Democratic Republic, the National Prize of the German Democratic Republic, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the German Music Authors' Prize. Chris Newman (born 1958 in London, lives in Berlin) is a contemporary composer, painter, author and performance artist.Ingeborg Ruthe"Ich bin mein eigenes Labor" ''Berliner Zeitung'', 9 November 1996. Helmut Oehring
Helmut Oehring (born 1961) is a German composer. He was born in East-Berlin, the son of deaf-mute parents. After training as a construction worker, Oehring worked as a cemetery gardener, forest worker, geriatric nurse and stoker. He is self-taught as guitarist and composer. From 1990 to 1992, Oehring studied with Friedrich Goldmann and Georg Katzer at the Academy of Arts, Berlin. He was a fellow of Villa Massimo in 1994/1995. Dieter Schnebel
Dieter Schnebel (14 March 1930 – 20 May 2018) was a German composer, theologian and musicologist. He composed orchestral music, chamber music, vocal music and stage works. From 1976 until his retirement in 1995, Schnebel served as professor of experimental music at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin. Career Schnebel was born in Lahr/Baden. He began general private music studies with Wilhelm Siebler from 1942 until 1945, when he started piano lessons with Wilhelm Resch, and continued study with him until 1949 at the age of 19. Roland Kluttig (born 1968 in Radeberg) is a German conductor. Biography From 1986 to 1991 he studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik "Carl Maria von Weber" in Dresden. Barbara Buchholz
Barbara Buchholz (8 December 195910 April 2012) was a Berlin-based German musician and composer. She was one of the leading theremin players of the world. Life Buchholz was born in Duisburg. She studied flute, guitar, bass guitar and singing at the Bielefeld University. She earned her first success as a bass player in the German woman jazz band ''Reichlich Weiblich''. Since the early 1980s she worked on various interdisciplinary projects both as performer and composer. She produced e.g. ''Tap It Deep - „midified“ Steppdance and music'', ''Human Interactivity'' and ''Theremin: Berlin-Moscow''. Philipp Maintz
Philipp Maintz (born 28 February 1977, in Aachen) is a German composer. Career Maintz studied composition with Michael Reudenbach and Robert HP Platz, and electronic music with Karlheinz Essl. He studied further at the CRFMW (Centre de Recherches et de Formations Musicales de Wallonie) of the University of Liège and the IRCAM (Institut des Recherches et Coordinations Musicales). He received the Ernst von Siemens Composer' Prize in 2005. He was granted a scholarship from the Federal Government for the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. In 2010 he was a Stipendiat of the Villa Massimo. His opera ''Maldoror'' on a libretto by Thomas Fiedler after ''Les Chants de Maldoror'' by Comte de Lautréamont was premiered at the Munich Biennale in 2010.
