Kamala Lyn Parks
Kamala Lyn Parks is an American drummer and songwriter from Berkeley, California. She played drums for Kamala & The Karnivores (with Ivy DuBois of Bitch Fight and Sweet Baby (band), Sweet Baby, Lynda Skulpone, and Michelle Cruz Gonzales of Bitch Fight and Spitboy), Cringer (band), Cringer, The Gr'ups, The Gr’ups, Naked Aggression, and Hers Never Existed. In 1986, Victor Hayden and Kamala partnered with Maximumrocknroll to establish 924 Gilman Street, an all-ages collectively organized music venue in Berkeley. She was instrumental in finding the warehouse in North Berkeley that became home to the local punk scene. She also actively participated in the city council meeting for the venue's zoning approval. For years, she booked shows at Gilman, while also cultivating a national tour network for punk bands such as Operation Ivy (band), Operation Ivy, Neurosis (band), Neurosis, and Citizen Fish. Recess Records
Recess Records is an independent record label founded in 1988. Label founder Todd Congelliere (frontman for F.Y.P and Toys That Kill) initially made 100 cassettes of F.Y.P's songs and sold them at skateboard contests. Two years later, Congelliere released a vinyl record, F.Y.P's ''Extra Credit'', an 11-song 7-inch record, and the label took off from there. In between touring the U.S., Europe, and Japan, Congelliere began releasing records for fellow punk rock and DIY bands, eventually having a roster of close to 20 artists on his label. Pinhead Gunpowder, fronted by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, announced in April 2008 that a new 7" single from the band would be released on Recess Records in late May 2008. Lookout Records (stylized as Lookout! Records) was an independent record label, initially based in Laytonville, California and later in Berkeley, focusing on punk rock. Established in 1987, the label is best known for having released Operation Ivy’s only album, ''Energy'', and Green Day's first two albums, ''39/Smooth'' and ''Kerplunk''. Following the departure of co-founder Larry Livermore in 1997, the label departed from its "East Bay sound" and proved unable to match early success. In 2005 the label ran into financial difficulties after several high-profile artists rescinded the rights to their Lookout Records material. 1-2-3-4 Go! Records is an American independent record label and retail store that specializes in punk rock and indie rock. Physical and Digital Music is distributed by Revolver. The label was founded in August 2001 in Seattle with the release of the Spitting Teeth 7" "Legacy of Cruciality". In December 2003 the label moved to Oakland, California. In March 2008 the label opened a retail record store in the Temescal neighborhood of North Oakland. The store initially focused on punk rock, indie rock, garage rock, and related genres but has since expanded to cover a wide variety of new and used records. The store hosts live music performances and occasional art shows. Frank Portman of The Mr. T Experience and Green Day have performed there. Citizen Fish is an English punk rock band that has been active since 1990 and shares members with Subhumans. Citizen Fish does not emphasize the raw political statements and nihilistic viewpoint of the former, instead focusing on issues of social alienation and human interaction, viewed through a more optimistic lens. Both bands deal with themes such as anti-consumerism and vegetarianism. Sweet Baby (band)
Sweet Baby (originally known as Sweet Baby Jesus) was a pop punk band that originated from Berkeley, California, and was part of the 924 Gilman Street scene. They were signed to Ruby Records. Formed in 1986 by singer Dallas Denery and singer/guitarist Matt Buenrostro with Crispy Jim (later of The Saddlebacks) on bass and Dr. Frank (the frontman of The Mr. T Experience) on drums. Frank and Crispy Jim did not appear on any Sweet Baby recordings, having been already replaced by Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam, Knapsack) and Richie Bucher (Jüke, Wynona Ryders), respectively. Aaron Elliott aka Aaron Cometbus also played drums for them on their 1989 US tour. They had two songs on the Maximum Rock and Roll compilation ''Turn it Around'' (1988), "She's from Salinas" and "Pathetic."
