Kaliroots
Kaliroots is a Canadian roots reggae band from Mont-Saint-Hilaire. It is the first French-speaking reggae band to establish itself in Quebec, and the first French-speaking group to do reggae in French and English on the same album. The band's leader is keyboardist Jean-Sebastien Girard. History In 1995, guitarist Allan Peddie and a friend, Vancouver bassist Sean Hill, founded a reggae duo called Rootsy Kali. They played a few parties, then Hill returned to B.C. But others had become interested and, in 1996, Kaliroots formed as a nine-member band, with musicians from the classical, jazz and rock worlds. They began performing in bars in Montreal, created the Reggae Night Fever concept at Club Soda, and spent the summer of 1997 playing The Jailhouse Rock Cafe every Friday night, as well as gigs at clubs such as Le Medley Showbar (The Medley). Carole Facal
Carole Facal is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Quebec who writes and performs in both English and French under the stage name Caracol. Early life Born to an Uruguayan father and a Swiss mother and raised in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Facal was trained in classical violin. Always athletic, she left home at 17 to pursue a career as a snowboarder in British Columbia. There, she purchased a guitar and began to write her own music. Career Facal ultimately returned to Quebec and joined the reggae group Kaliroots, also forming (in 1998) a dreadlocked duet act called DobaCaracol with Dorianne Fabreg (Doba). DobaCaracol (the name is a fusion of the two singers' stage names) had a percussive world music sound and toured internationally. Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec
Mont-Saint-Hilaire () is an off-island suburb of Montreal in southeastern Quebec, Canada, on the Richelieu River in the Regional County Municipality of La Vallée-du-Richelieu. The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 18,200. The city is named after the Mont Saint-Hilaire. A significant deposit of the semi-precious mineral sodalite is located near Mont-Saint-Hilaire. History Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville was granted the seignory of the region in 1694. By 1745 a mountain village had been formed with the first chapel being built in 1798 near the Richelieu River. Nearly twenty years later, in 1822, a ferry operating between Beloeil and Mont-Saint-Hilaire came into service. ''Montreal Mirror'' or just ''Mirror'' was a free English language alternative newsweekly based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada which was distributed every Thursday. It had a circulation of 70,000 and reached a quarter of a million readers per week. First published on June 20, 1985, the publication became a weekly in September 1989. It was bought by media giant Quebecor in 1997. It was published by ''Communications Gratte-Ciel Ltée''. The Jailhouse Rock Cafe
The Jailhouse Rock Cafe was a club and concert venue located at 30 Mont-Royal West in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in a neighbourhood known as Le Plateau-Mont-Royal. The venue, founded by Jacques Corbo, opened in 1992 and established itself as an important centre for underground music, Underground art and culture in Montreal. History The site of the Jailhouse Rock Café initially housed, from 1920-1957, the Belmont Moving Picture Theatre. The building was then home to a Greek restaurant (1960-1983) and later, Bar La Terrasse (1987-1992) before the Jailhouse's opening. The venue was founded by Jacques Corbo. The Wailers Band
The Wailers Band are a reggae band formed by Aston Barrett in 1989, one of several spinoffs from Bob Marley and the Wailers. History After the death of Bob Marley in 1981, the Wailers continued, led by Aston Barrett and Junior Marvin. The band continued to play a heavy worldwide touring schedule, and recorded as backing band with several singers. Carlton "Carly" Barrett, 36, was murdered at his Jamaica home in 1987. In 1989, Aston Barrett formed the Wailers Band, releasing the album ''I.D.'', and continued using the Wailers name when collaborating with other artists. ADISQ (french: Association québécoise de l'industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la video; eng, Québec Association for the Recording, Concert and Video Industries, link=yes) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the independent music industry in Quebec.
