Kalifa Kambi
Kalifa Kambi (May 1955 – 20 December 2011) was a member of the African Union's Pan-African Parliament from Gambia. He was the Deputy Minister of Agriculture. African Union
The African Union (AU) is a continental union consisting of member states of the African Union, 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. The AU was announced in the Sirte Declaration in Sirte, Libya, on 9 September 1999, calling for the establishment of the African Union. Pan-African Parliament
The Pan-African Parliament (PAP), also known as the African Parliament, is the legislative body of the African Union. It held its inaugural session in March 2004. The Parliament exercises oversight, and has advisory and consultative powers, having lasting for the first five years. Initially the seat of the Pan-African Parliament was in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but was later moved to Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. The goal in establishing the parliament was creating a space where people from all states of Africa could meet, deliberate, and pass some policy on issues that affect the entire continent of Africa. The Parliament is composed of five members per member state that have ratified the Protocol establishing it, including at least one woman per Member State. Kiang West is one of the six districts of the Lower River Division of the Gambia. The National Assembly of the Gambia is the unicameral legislature of the Gambia. The authorisation for the National Assembly lies in Chapter VII of the Constitution of the Gambia. It is composed of 53 members directly elected through first past the post, and a further five members appointed by the President. The Daily Observer
''The Daily Observer'' is a newspaper published in Bakau in Banjul, the Gambia. The paper, Gambia's first daily newspaper,Gabriel I. H. Williams, ''Liberia: the heart of darkness'', Trafford Publishing, 2002, p.333 was founded by Mae Gene and Kenneth Best in 1990. Kenneth Best had previously managed another paper called the ''Daily Observer'' in Liberia, until the First Liberian Civil War caused him to relocate with his family to the Gambia. In October 1994, following Yahya Jammeh's military coup, Best was expelled from Gambia, although the newspaper was allowed to continue. It was eventually shutdown by tax authorities on 23 August 2017 for non-compliance of its tax obligations.
