Kalgoorlie-Boulder (or just Kalgoorlie) is a city in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, located east-northeast of Perth at the end of the Great Eastern Highway. It is referred to as Kalgoorlie–Boulder as the surrounding urban area includes the historic townsite of Boulder and the local government area is the City of Kalgoorlie–Boulder. Kalgoorlie–Boulder lies on the traditional lands of the Wangkatja group of peoples. The City of Kalgoorlie–Boulder is a local government area in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, about east of the state capital, Perth. Its seat of government is the town of Kalgoorlie; all but 244 of the city's population live in either Kalgoorlie or Boulder. Great Eastern Highway is a road that links the Western Australian capital of Perth with the city of Kalgoorlie. Boulder, Western Australia
Boulder is a suburb of Kalgoorlie in the Western Australian Goldfields, east of Perth. The Boulder (horse) Races were a significant event in early twentieth century goldfields region history. The town maintained its separation from Kalgoorlie until the 1980s, however even prior to that era, many surveys and studies of the towns and their areas tended to join the names. Prior to 1989, Boulder was a town, but it was merged with Kalgoorlie to form the City of Kalgoorlie–Boulder. The population of Boulder in 1901 was 2,936 (1850 males and 1086 females), which increased to 5,658 (3090 males and 2568 females) in 1903. At the 2006 census, Boulder had a population of 5,178. Thomas Flanagan (prospector)
Thomas Flanagan (1 January 1832 – 16 November 1899) was a gold prospector who in 1893, together with fellow Irishmen Paddy Hannan and Dan Shea, found the first gold in what became the richest goldfield in Australia, in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Childhood Flanagan was baptised on 1 January 1832. His parents were Mary Lyons (c.1790-1870) and Michael Flanagan (c.1782-1865) who leased a farm in the district of Clonkerry, County Clare. Thomas was one of at least ten Flanagan children baptised in the parish of Doora Barefield (also known as Doora Kilraghtis). The parish is 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometres) from the town of Ennis. From 1831 all Irish children received an elementary education in literary and moral subjects, under the regulations of the state-funded National School (Ireland) system. Super Pit Gold Mine
The Fimiston Open Pit, colloquially known as the Super Pit, is an open-pit mine in Australia. It was Australia's largest open cut gold mine until 2016, when it was surpassed by the Newmont Boddington gold mine, also in Western Australia. The Super Pit is located off the Goldfields Highway on the south-east edge of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The pit is oblong in plan view and is approximately 3.5 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and over 600 metres deep. The Fimiston Open Pit is owned by Northern Star Resources. Goldfields Water Supply Scheme
The Goldfields Water Supply Scheme is a pipeline and dam project that delivers drinking water, potable water from Mundaring Weir in Perth to communities in Western Australia's Eastern Goldfields, particularly Coolgardie, Western Australia, Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The project was commissioned in 1896 and completed in 1903. The pipeline continues to operate today, supplying water to over 100,000 people in over 33,000 households as well as mines, farms and other enterprises. Water scarcity During the early 1890s, thousands of settlers had travelled into the barren and dry desert centre of Western Australia seeking gold, but the existing infrastructure for the supply of water was non-existent, and an urgent need arose. Paddy Hannan
Patrick Hannan (baptised 26 April 1840 – 4 November 1925) was a gold prospector whose lucrative discovery on 14 June 1893 set off a major gold rush in the area now known as Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia. The resulting goldfield has been mined ever since and is renowned as ''The Golden Mile'', the richest square mile in the world. The modern open-cut mine is a vast, astonishing sight known as the Super Pit. Coolgardie, Western Australia
Coolgardie is a small town in Western Australia located around east of the state capital, Perth; and southwest of Kalgoorlie. It has a population of approximately 850 people.
