Kalevala (Russian Band)
Kalevala ( Russian: Калевала) is a Russian folk metal band. Name The name of the band is derived from the Finnish national epic. The group chose this name because of lead vocalist Xenia Markevich's Finnish parents. Moreover, the band is inspired by ancient Finnish and Sami music, Finno-Ugric legends, and contemporary Finnish bands like Finntroll, Korpiklaani, etc. History After a concert in Penza on 15 April 2007 with Nevid, singer Xenia and guitarist Nikita Andrianov decided to leave the band and start a new one. Together with keyboardist and accordion player Alexandr Oleinikov, bassist Alexandr Schmel, and drummer Mark Vasili, they started Kalevala. In April 2008, the band released their debut album, ''Kudel Belosnezhnogo L'na''. One year later, they came out with their second record, ''Kukushkiny Djeti'', followed by ''Vjed'ma'' a year after. Finntroll
Finntroll is a Finnish metal band from Helsinki that combines elements of black metal and folk metal. Finntroll's lyrics are mostly in Swedish, the only exception being the song "Madon Laulu" on '' Visor om slutet''. Finntroll's original singer, Katla, decided to use Swedish over Finnish since he was part of a Swedish-speaking minority in Finland and the sound of the language seemed to better suit the band's "trollish" outfit. Despite several vocalist changes, this tradition has continued. According to band members Vreth and Skrymer, they took their name from an old Finnish legend where Swedish priests coming to Finland had an encounter with a wild-looking man who killed most of their party. The survivors came back bearing the tale of the Finn-Troll. Korpiklaani ( Finnish: ) is a Finnish folk metal band from Lahti who was formerly known as Shamaani Duo and Shaman. History Shamaani Duo While other folk metal bands began with metal before adding folk music, Korpiklaani started with folk music before turning metal. The roots of Korpiklaani can be traced back to a Sámi folk music group under the name of "Shamaani Duo", an "in house restaurant band" created by Jonne Järvelä in 1993. An album of folk music (''Hunka Lunka'') was released under this name before Järvelä relocated and "Shamaani Duo" morphed into "Shaman". Shaman Shaman was the second incarnation of Korpiklaani, formed in 1997 which is notable for the heavy use of original native Sámic music elements and lyrics in Northern Sámi.
