Kaleva – also known as Kalevi or Kalev – and his sons are important heroic figures in Estonian, Finnish and Karelian mythology. In the Finnish epic the ''Kalevala'', he is an ancient Finnish ruler. Tallinna Kalev is a basketball team based in Tallinn, Estonia. The team was founded in 2002 as Pirita Palliklubi and played in the Korvpalli Meistriliiga (KML) from 2002 to 2024. JK Sillamäe Kalev, commonly known as Sillamäe Kalev, or simply as Sillamäe, is an Estonian football club based in Sillamäe. Founded in 1957, Sillamäe Kalev was one of the founding members of the Meistriliiga. The club competed in the Meistriliiga, the top flight of Estonian football in 2017, but was declared bankrupt in March 2018. The ''Kalev'' class consisted of two mine laying submarines built for the Estonian Navy. Development history The newly independent Republic of Estonia followed the Finnish naval armament program and the common top secret defence cooperation in acquiring submarines. Estonian Sports Association Kalev () is a sports association in Estonia, founded in 1901. History The association was founded in 1901 in Tallinn as the Kalev Amateur Cyclist Society (). In 1908, a tennis club was established at the society. Later it was joined by sections of athletics, swimming, football, Greco-Roman wrestling, rowing etc. In the 1920s, a basketball club was also set up at the organization.
