Kai Steffen
Kai Steffen (born 19 September 1961 in Hamburg) is a former German professional football player. Steffen played in youth team of Hamburger SV. In 1979, he went to California Surf and played for two years in the NASL. 1981 he returned to Germany and in 1984 he got a contract for the professional team of Hamburger SV. In 1986, he made and played in the Olympics for the German national team, and played again in 1990. But after three years in the German Bundesliga, he made only seven Matches. The California Surf were an American soccer team that competed in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1978 to 1981. The team was based in Anaheim, California and played their home games at Anaheim Convention Center and the Long Beach Arena during the indoor seasons and Anaheim Stadium for outdoor matches. The Los Angeles Lazers were an indoor soccer team that played in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) from 1982 to 1989. History Jerry Buss, the owner of California Sports, the parent company of the Los Angeles Lakers, Kings and Strings of TeamTennis and The Forum, the home arena of all three teams, was always looking for innovative ways to add additional creative programming to the Forum. He called upon his oldest son Johnny Buss and long-time California Sports executive Ron Weinstein to bring indoor soccer to Los Angeles. In 1981, Buss was awarded an expansion franchise at the same August league meeting where the MISL granted a one-year leave of absence to the Philadelphia Fever.
