Peter Boyers (born September 30, 1962) is a former member of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands, National Parliament of the Solomon Islands. He represented the Vonavona, Vona Vona constituency in Western Province, Solomon Islands, Western Province. He lost his seat in the 2010 national election. Political Parties In The Solomon Islands
This article lists political parties in Solomon Islands. Solomon Islands have a multi-party system with numerous political parties. Political culture In most elections, no one party has won an absolute majority of seats and so usually parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. The one exception is the 1989 election, when the People's Alliance Party (PAP) led by Solomon Mamaloni did win an absolute majority. However, in late 1990, Mamaloni broke away from the PAP and continued ruling in a coalition government until the 1993 election. Many parties are established immediately prior to an election and most are very short-lived. Some will achieve no parliamentary representation and dissolve within a year. Others will achieve parliamentary representation but, having served their purpose, are then discarded. 2019 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in Solomon Islands on 3 April 2019 to determine the composition of the 11th Parliament. The election was the first to occur since the conclusion of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) in 2017. Parliament passed amendments to the electoral act in 2018 that included the introduction of pre-polling, a significant increase in campaign budgets for candidates and stricter penalties for individuals committing electoral offences such as vote-buying. Ten of the thirteen parties that contested the election won seats, and the Solomon Islands Democratic Party and the Kadere Party were the parties that secured the highest number, winning eight each. However, as in previous elections, independent candidates won the largest share of seats, securing 21. 2014 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Solomon Islands on 19 November 2014 to determine the composition of the 10th Parliament. The election was held following the passage of the Political Parties Integrity Bill, which sought to discourage party-switching. A biometric voter registration system was introduced before the election, which removed a large number of double enrolments and deceased voters from the electoral roll. Six of the twelve parties that contested the election won seats. The Democratic Alliance emerged as the largest, winning seven. Independents, who comprised the majority of candidates, won 32 of the 50 seats in the National Parliament. Only one woman was elected. Voter turnout was a record 89%. Ethel Lency Vokia
Ethel Lency Vokia is a member of the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands. In 2020 she became the fourth woman in the 2019-2024 Parliament and only the sixth woman ever to be elected to that Parliament. Political career Vokia's husband, Jaimie Vokia, had been elected to the Solomon Islands Parliament in 2019 as the representative of North East Guadalcanal constituency on the island of Guadalcanal. However, he was subsequently found guilty of bribing voters and was dismissed from office. His wife ran as an Independent candidate in the by-election to replace him and secured victory, defeating candidates who included the former prime minister, Derek Sikua, who had been member of parliament for North East Guadalcanal from 2006 to 2019. Lanelle Olandrea Tanangada (born 1 July 1979) is a Solomon Islands teacher and politician who has served as the country's Education Minister since April 2020. Early life and education Lanelle Oleandra Tanangada was born on 1 July 1979 in Western Province. Her father is part Ranongga and Vella and her mother is from Marovo Lagoon. Her parents were Seventh-day Adventist missionaries and she has one elder brother. She attended SDA mission primary schools in Honiara and Betikama Adventist High School. Freda Tuki Soriocomua (usually referred to as Freda Soria Comua) is a politician of Solomon Islands who served as Minister of Rural Development from 15 December 2014 to 18 August 2015 and subsequently as Minister of Women, Youth, and Children's Affairs from 18 August 2015 to 8 October 2018 when she was removed from office after being found guilty of vote buying or corruption by the Solomon Islands High Court. Samuel Manetoali (born 24 January 1969) is a member of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands. He represents the Gao/Bugotu constituency in Isabel Province. Early life and education Manetoali attended Lepi Primary School and then went on to do his secondary education at King George Sixth National School in Honiara. He attended law school at the University of Papua New Guinea and graduated with an LLB degree and further unspecified qualifications from the University of Tasmania and University of South Australia. Career Prior to entering politics, Manetoali worked in the country's Public Solicitors Office, as a private lawyer, and a legal adviser to the Isabel Provincial Government.
