Kabushima
is a small island located in Hachinohe, Aomori, in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan. Part of the Tanesashi Coast, it was incorporated into the Sanriku Fukkō National Park from May 2013. Geography The island has a length of and a width of . The highest point of the island measures in elevation. The total area of the island is approximately . Although called it is an island, it is connected to the mainland by a causeway constructed in 1942 so that people may walk to it from the shore. Important Bird Area The island is noted as a nesting ground for Black-tailed gulls and has been protected as a National Natural Monument of Japan since 1922. It has also been recognised as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. Black-tailed Gull
The black-tailed gull (''Larus crassirostris'') is a gull native to shorelines of East Asia. Description The black-tailed gull is medium-sized (46 cm) (19 Inches), with a wingspan of 126–128 cm (49.6 - 50.3 Inches). It has yellow legs and a red and black spot at the end of the bill. Males and females have identical plumage and features, although males are larger in size than females. This gull takes four years to reach full adult plumage. As the name suggests, it has a black tail. The bird has a cat-like call, giving it its Japanese name — ''umineko'' (海猫, "sea cat"), and Korean name — ''gwaeng-yi'' gull, which means "cat" gull. In Hachinohe their calls are one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan. Distribution and habitat The species is resident to coastlines of the East China Sea, Japan, Manchuria and the Kuril Islands. Kabushima Shrine
, located in Hachinohe, Aomori, is a Shinto shrine in Japan. It was first built in 1269 on top of the Kabushima island by fishermen to pray for safety and good harvest at sea. The shrine has been rebuilt several times throughout its history. It was burnt down in November 2015 and rebuilt in 2020. Black-tailed gulls The shrine is linked with the black-tailed gull (海猫, ''umineko'', "sea cat" in Japanese) found in great numbers on the island between March and August as the island is their nesting ground. The gulls are associated with the Buddhist goddess Benzaiten, whose image is found within the shrine. The droppings of the gulls falling on people is considered good luck and people may go to the shrine to receive a commemorative tablet should it happen, although umbrellas are provided at the location for visitors who need them for shelter. Sanriku Fukkō National Park
is a national park extending along the Sanriku Coast of Japan from Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture through Iwate Prefecture to Kesennuma in Miyagi Prefecture. The national park was created on 24 May 2013 and covers a land area of . History On 2 May 1955 the was created in the Tōhoku region of Honshū in northern Japan. The park extended for 180 kilometers from north to south along the coastline of the Pacific Ocean from northern Miyagi prefecture to northern Iwate prefecture. It had a land area of . On 24 May 2013 the park was incorporated into Sanriku Fukkō National Park. This was in the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. 100 Soundscapes Of Japan
The are a number of noises selected by the Ministry of the Environment (Japan), Ministry of the Environment as particularly representative of the country. They were chosen in 1996, as part of government efforts to combat noise pollution and to protect and promote protection of the Environment of Japan, environment. There were 738 submissions received from all over the country and the 100 "best" were selected after examination by the Japan Soundscape Study Group. These soundscapes are intended to function as symbols for local people and to promote the rediscovery of the sounds of everyday life.
