Kabelo Gwamanda
Kabelo Gwamanda is a South African politician who was the mayor of Johannesburg from May 2023 until August 2024. A member of the Al Jama-ah party, he was the ninth executive mayor of the metropolitan municipality since 2016 and is currently deployed as the MMC for community development in the city of johannesburg metro. Mayoral career After fellow Al Jama-ah councillor Thapelo Amad resigned as mayor of Johannesburg due to pressure from coalition partners, the largest party in council, the African National Congress (ANC), endorsed Gwamanda for the position of mayor on 5 May 2023 in order to keep its alliance with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), another party in council. He was elected during a council vote held via secret ballot on that same day, receiving 139 votes out of the 266 votes. Gwamanda announced his mayoral committee shortly after his election. The Democratic Alliance (, DA) is a South African list of political parties in South Africa, political party and the official opposition to the ruling African National Congress (ANC). The secret ballot, also known as the Australian ballot, is a voting method in which a voter's identity in an election or a referendum is anonymous. This forestalls attempts to influence the voter by intimidation, blackmailing, and potential vote buying. This system is one means of achieving the goal of political privacy. Secret ballots are used in conjunction with various voting systems. The most basic form of a secret ballot utilizes blank pieces of paper upon which each voter writes their choice. Without revealing the votes to anyone, the voter folds the ballot paper in half and places it in a sealed box. This box is later emptied for counting. Thapelo Amad
Thapelo Amad is a South African politician and imam, and a former mayor of Johannesburg. A member of the Johannesburg City Council, Amad is affiliated with the Al Jama-ah party. On 27 January 2023, he was elected mayor of Johannesburg with the support of the African National Congress (ANC). His election made him the first Muslim to serve as mayor of Johannesburg. He resigned as mayor on 24 April 2023 to avoid being defeated in a motion of no confidence. Background Amad was born in Soweto in present-day Gauteng. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is a South African left-wing to far-left pan-Africanist and Marxist–Leninist political party. The African National Congress (ANC) is a social-democratic political party in South Africa.
