Ka-Mer
The Kamer Foundation (Turkish: Kamer Vakfi), sometimes referred to as Ka-Mer, is a Turkish women's group that finds shelter for and offers legal aid to women who have been threatened by their relatives. Background Founded in 1997, by an elementary school teacher "who had become committed to the issue of Kurdish women's oppression through her and her husband's experiences with violence in the 1980s and 1990s" and is located in the city of Diyarbakir, Turkey. KAMER took a different approach to feminism in Turkey by turning away notional feminist issues and instead focusing on changing the Kurdish culture's social, cultural, and political view of women. Honor Killing
An honor killing (American English), ''honour killing'' (Commonwealth English), or ''shame killing'' is a type of murder in which a person, usually a woman or girl, is killed by or at the behest of male members of their family or their male partner. As a form of femicide, it is caused by culturally sanctioned beliefs that homicides or femicides are necessary as retribution for the perceived dishonoring of the family by the victim. The murders are condemned by international conventions and human rights organizations, while various communities often justify and encourage honor killings. In cases where the victim is an outsider, not murdering this individual would, in some regions, cause family members to be accused of cowardice or a "moral defect", and subsequently be stigmatized in their community. ''Snow'' () is a novel by Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk. It was originally published in Turkish in 2002, followed by an English translation by Maureen Freely that was published in 2004. The story encapsulates many of the political and cultural tensions of modern Turkey, including a real suicide epidemic among teenage girls, which took place in the city of Batman. Diyarbakır is the largest Kurdish-majority city in Turkey. It is the administrative center of Diyarbakır Province. Situated around a high plateau by the banks of the Tigris river on which stands the historic Diyarbakır Fortress, it is the administrative capital of the Diyarbakır Province of southeastern Turkey. Honor suicide is a type of suicide whereby a person kills themself to escape the shame of an action they consider immoral or dishonorable, such as having had extra-marital sexual affairs, partaking in a scandal, or suffering defeat in battle. It is distinguished from regular suicide in that the subject is actively deciding to either privately or publicly kill themself for the sake of restoring or protecting honor.
