KYKS (105.1 FM) is a Townsquare Media radio station serving the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area with a country music format. History KYKS was first proposed by K.M. Bardield, under the licensee name of Lufkin Broadcasting Corporation in 1972. The facility was proposed to operate with 100 kilowatts non-directional, at above average terrain, from a transmission site on Farm to Market Road 2021, 6.5 miles northwest of Lufkin. The specifications for the site gave it the largest FM coverage area in the Lufkin-Nacogdoches area at the time. The facility was built and received an initial license to cover on September 29, 1976, as KLUF-FM. Lufkin, Texas
Lufkin is the largest city in Angelina County, Texas, United States and is the county seat. The city is situated in Deep East Texas and is west of the Texas- Louisiana state line. Its population is 34,143 as of 2020. Lufkin was founded in 1884 and named for Abraham P. Lufkin. It originally served as a stop on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway. It was officially incorporated on October 15, 1890. Lufkin continued to serve as a stop on the railroad until 1890. Three businessmen founded Angelina Lumber Company, which led to much of the economic prosperity Lufkin later enjoyed. When the so-called "timber boom" came to an end, a new "golden era of expansion" began. Lufkin became more industrialized with the opening of Lufkin Industries and Southland Paper Mill. KTBQ (107.7 FM) is a Townsquare Media classic rock formatted radio station serving the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area. Q107 has featured classic rock since 1997, remaining in the format over 25 years. History In 1989 Ken Williams from Center City Communications purchased KTBC-FM 92.1 from Texan Broadcasting Company Bob Dunn and upgraded to 50 kW and moved to 107.7 FM creating Q107 and changing the calls to KTBQ. Q107 signed on the air on September 7, 1989, as an adult contemporary format with Jimbo Powers (Jim Kipping) and JJ Hemmingway programming the station as the areas first Hot AC format. KRBA
KRBA (1340 AM), is a terrestrial American radio station, licensed to Lufkin, Texas, United States. The station is currently owned by Kasa Family Limited Partnership. History KRBA began broadcasting on May 3, 1938 at 100 watts of daytime only power, operating on 1310 kilocycles in the AM radio band. A License to Cover was issued for the facility on June 15, 1938. It is the first broadcast facility to be licensed in Lufkin-Nacogdoches. The facility increased power to 250 watts unlimited hours on July 13, 1939. During an industry wide frequency reallocation procedure under the NARBA agreement, on March 28, 1941 the station's operation was moved by the FCC to 1340 kilocycles.
