KVIK (104.7 FM broadcasting, FM) is a radio station city of license, licensed to serve Decorah, Iowa, Decorah, the county seat of Winneshiek County, Iowa. The station is owned by LA Communications Stations, Inc. KVIK broadcasts a classic hits music format to northeast Iowa. On weekends, the station broadcasts live NASCAR Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series motor racing via Performance Racing Network and Motor Racing Network. Motor Racing Network (MRN) is an American radio network that syndicates broadcasts of auto racing events, particularly NASCAR. MRN was founded in 1970 by NASCAR founder Bill France, Sr. and broadcaster Ken Squier, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of NASCAR. Its first broadcast was the 1970 Daytona 500. KDEC (1240 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station broadcasting in Decorah, Iowa. KDEC airs an adult contemporary format branded as "The River". KDEC broadcasts on a frequency shared with local non-commercial college radio station KWLC. History In 1926, Decorah's first radio station started broadcasting from the south end of the second floor of the Ben Bear building, with Charles Greenley the announcer. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Decorah High School is a public high school located in Decorah, Iowa. The school colors are red and royal blue, and the mascot is the Vikings. It is a part of the Decorah Community School District. In addition to Decorah, the census-designated place of Burr Oak is in the district boundary, and therefore the high school's attendance area.
