KUNC (91.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a News/Talk public radio format. Licensed to Greeley, Colorado, United States, it serves Northern Colorado, including Fort Collins and Greeley. The station is owned and operated by Community Radio for Northern Colorado, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. History KUNC began operations January 6, 1967 at the University of Northern Colorado as KCBL. It became KUNC on May 1, 1970. During the Fall of 2000, UNC put the station up for sale in an effort to save money. Colorado Public Radio in Denver agreed to purchase the station; it had been looking to expand its offerings to Northern Colorado for some time. However, an upwelling of support from the local Northern Colorado community as well as a concerted effort by staff at the station, targeted at "keeping community radio local," led to a fundraising effort which produced a counter-offer from the newly formed Community Radio for Northern Colorado. Colorado Public Radio
Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is a public radio state network based in Denver, Colorado that broadcasts three services: news, classical music and Indie 102.3, which plays adult album alternative music. CPR airs its programming on 15 full-power stations, augmented by 17 translators. Their combined signal reaches 80 percent of Colorado. CPR also manages KRCC, the NPR member station in Colorado Springs, in partnership with the station's owner, Colorado College. As of 2013, CPR had 440,000 weekly listeners, 47,000 contributing members and annual revenue of $14 million. KJAC is a non-commercial public radio station located in Timnath, Colorado, broadcasting to the Fort Collins-Denver, Colorado area on 105.5 FM. History Adult hits (2004–2012) The station previously aired an adult hits music format branded as "Jack FM". Jack FM Denver was the first Jack radio station in the United States. Denver's Jack employed a comedic irreverence in its presentation, and a style of music endemic to the varied tastes of Colorado's front-range listeners. Each Jack station is a little different, and KJAC's attention to the style of Colorado gave the station a unique and local feel. In the broadcasting industry, an owned-and-operated station (frequently abbreviated as an O&O) usually refers to a television or radio station owned by the network with which it is associated. This distinguishes such a station from an network affiliate, affiliate, which is independently owned and carries network programming by contract. The concept of an O&O is clearly defined in the United States and Canada (and to some extent, several other countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Argentina and Japan), where network-owned stations had historically been the exception rather than the rule.
