KSYC-FM
KSYC-FM (103.9 FM) is a public radio station based in Yreka, California, owned by Southern Oregon University and operated by Jefferson Public Radio. History The station was founded in the 1970s by Dalmatian Enterprises, Inc., which also owned KSYC (1490 AM), the original country music station in Siskiyou County. The new station was given the call sign KYRE and licensed to operate at frequency 97.7 FM. It signed on the air on June 1, 1983, and played the pop/rock format with George Calvin Booth as the station's program director and main on-air talent. In the latter years of KYRE, it was promoted as "Hot Hits Y98". Y98 later became an affiliate of AT40 with Casey Kasem on August 24, 1985. The station was purchased in 1995 by Siskiyou Radio Partners, Inc., and the call sign was changed to KSYC-FM as a way of moving the country music format over to the FM band and make way for the fast-growing news/talk format on the AM station. KHWA
KHWA (102.3 FM) is a radio station based in Mount Shasta, California (city of license is Weed, California), owned by Southern Oregon University and operated by Jefferson Public Radio, which also owns KSYC-FM in Yreka. KHWA broadcasts to the Siskiyou County and Redding markets, and has one of the largest geographical reaches of any FM station Northern California. The station last played an adult hits format. KZRO (100.1 FM) (also known as Z100fm or The Z-Channel) is an oldies/ classic hits/classic rock formatted radio station based in Mount Shasta, California (city of license is Dunsmuir, California). The owner, general manager, program director and lead on-air talent is Dennis Michael Crepps, known by his radio name "Dennis Michaels". Yreka, California
Yreka ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Siskiyou County, California, United States, near the Shasta River; the city has an area of about , most of it land. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,807, reflecting an increase from 7,765 counted in the 2010 census. Yreka is home to the College of the Siskiyous, Klamath National Forest Interpretive Museum and the Siskiyou County Museum. History In March 1851, Abraham Thompson, a mule train packer, discovered gold near Rocky Gulch while traveling along the Siskiyou Trail from southern Oregon. By April 1851, 2,000 miners had arrived in "Thompson's Dry Diggings" to test their luck, and by June 1851, a gold rush "boomtown" of tents, shanties, and a few rough cabins had sprung up. Jefferson Public Radio
Jefferson Public Radio (JPR) is a regional public radio broadcasting network serving over a million potential listeners in Southern Oregon and the Shasta Cascade region of northern California. Owned by Southern Oregon University, the network is headquartered on the SOU campus in Ashland, near Medford. It is named after the proposed State of Jefferson, an area which roughly corresponds to its vast and mostly mountainous coverage area of . JPR's flagship station, KSOR in Ashland, signed on in April 1969 as a 10-watt station operated by students at what was then Southern Oregon College. It began moving away from its college radio roots during the 1970s, becoming a full NPR member by the end of the decade. The station is currently owned by Educational Media Foundation. KMJC (620 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a public radio format. Licensed to Mount Shasta, California, United States, the station is currently owned by Southern Oregon University. History The station, founded in 1947 by David Rees, Sr. of the Shasta Cascade Broadcasting Corporation, signed on the air June 12, 1947, as KWSD, broadcasting on 1340 kHz with 250 W of power. History The station was founded and licensed on September 2, 1947, by the Siskiyou County Broadcasting Company and signed on the air as a country music station, which had been Yreka's radio staple for many years. On August 15, 1960, the station was sold to Northern Broadcasting Company and its format slowly evolved to one of "middle of the road", with polkas being heard regularly in the mid 1960s through early 1970s.
