KXEL (1540 AM), branded as ''News/Talk 1540'', is a Class A, clear-channel radio station serving the Waterloo and Cedar Rapids metropolitan areas with a All-news radio/Talk radio format. KXEL is one of two FCC Class 1-A stations in Iowa, the other being WHO in Des Moines. It operates at 50,000 watts, 24 hours a day from a two-tower facility near Dysart, IA on the Benton/ Tama County line. A single tower is used during the day for a non-directional signal. It provides secondary coverage to most of eastern Iowa during the day (as far west as Des Moines, as far south as Ottumwa and as far east as Dubuque and as far north as Mason City). At night, power is fed to both towers in a directional pattern to protect ZNS-1, Nassau, Bahamas. KFMW (107.9 FM), known as "Rock 108", is a radio station licensed to Waterloo, Iowa with studios in Hiawatha, Iowa. The station has an active rock format. Its signal is transmitted from the AFLAC Tower north of Rowley, Iowa. History KFMW came on the air in November 1968 as KWWL-FM and was originally owned by Black Hawk Broadcasting Company of Waterloo. It was one of two radio stations owned by Black Hawk Broadcasting's NBC affiliate, KWWL-TV, and for approximately 10 years, KWWL-FM/KFMW programmed an instrumental music format of what was called " beautiful music" by some and "elevator music" by most. KPTY (1330 kHz, "107.3 Hank FM") is an AM radio station serving the Waterloo/ Cedar Falls metropolitan area with a classic country format. It is under ownership of NRG Media. History On June 12, 1947, the Federal Communications Commission granted a construction permit to Black Hawk Broadcasting Company for a radio station in Waterloo, Iowa. Less than five months later, Black Hawk president R.J. McElroy made the launch of KWWL a reality. The station began broadcasting on 1320 kHz, operating with 1,000 watts of power in studio space once occupied by WMT in the Hotel Russell-Lamson. The frequency changed to 1330 a short time later, operating with 5,000 watts. McElroy formed KWWL-TV in 1953, and KWWL-FM (now KFMW) in 1968.
