KMRU Interview Aug 2021
Joseph Kamaru, better known as KMRU, is an ambient musician. He was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and later relocated to Berlin, Germany. Musical career As a child, Kamaru played the guitar and sang in a choir. He first discovered electronic music in high school, after finding a copy of FL Studio on the school's computers. Kamaru is known for being prolific; he published almost twenty releases on Bandcamp between 2017 and 2021. Kamaru was part of an Ableton Live ad in 2019, in which he recorded field recordings from a broken piano. His 2019 extended play ''Erased'' used piano, field recordings, and synthesized drums. In 2020, Kamaru released the albums ''Saal'', ''Peel'', ''Opaquer'' and ''Jar''. Released on Editions Mego, ''Peel'' was created in 48 hours and blended organic and synthetic textures. Dissolution Grip
''Dissolution Grip'' is the fourteenth studio album by ambient musician Joseph Kamaru, known as KMRU. It was released on September 29, 2023, via OFNOT. To create the album's sounds, Kamaru looked at the waveforms of field recordings, creating synthesizer sounds from the visuals. ''Dissolution Grip'' is an ambient, drone, and experimental album, consisting of two long-form tracks. The album received positive reviews from ''Loud and Quiet'', ''Resident Advisor'', and ''Pitchfork''''.'' Kevin Richard Martin, often known under his recording alias The Bug, is an English musician and music producer. Martin moved from Weymouth to London around 1990 and is now currently based in mainland Europe. He has been active for over three decades in the genres of dub, jazzcore, industrial hip hop, dancehall, and dubstep. Benga Music
Benga is a genre of Kenyan popular music. It evolved between the late 1940s and late 1960s, in Kenya's capital city of Nairobi. In the 1940s, the African Broadcasting Service in Nairobi aired a steady stream of soukous, South African kwela, Congolese finger-style guitar and various kinds of Cuban dance music that heavily influenced emergence of benga. There were also popular folk songs of Tanzania and Kenya's Luo peoples that formed the base on benga creation. Luo Benga The Luo of Kenya have long played an eight-string lyre called ''nyatiti'', and guitarists from the area sought to imitate the instrument's syncopated melodies. In benga, the electric bass guitar is played in a style reminiscent of the nyatiti. Joseph Kamaru
Joseph Kamaru (1939 – 3 October 2018) was a Kenyan Benga and gospel musician and political activist. He was an icon, a hero, and a leading Kikuyu musician, who has sold about half a million records. He was notable for his politically motivated songs either praising or criticising the government. His music covered the teachings of life, promiscuity and sexual harassment in Kenyan politics and social culture. He was known for his friendship with President Jomo Kenyatta, but after writing a song condemning the murder of JM Kariuki, they ceased to be close. He also wrote songs praising President Daniel arap Moi. Early life Kamaru was from Kangema, Muranga District. In 1957 he moved to Nairobi where he got a cleaning job. His first formal job was working as a house-help and a nanny, earning enough money to purchase his first guitar.
