Premont is a city in Jim Wells County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,653 at the 2010 census. Geography Premont is located at (27.358064, –98.125766). It is situated at along U.S. Highway 281 (Future Interstate 69C) in south central Jim Wells County, south of Alice and north of Falfurrias, two towns that Morgan Smith of the ''Texas Tribune'' refers to as "relative hubs". Falfurrias ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Brooks County, Texas. Its population was 4,981 at the 2010 census, in a county that in the same census was just over 7,000. The town is named for founder Edward Cunningham Lasater's ranch, La Mota de Falfurrias. In 1893, the Falfurrias ranch was one of the largest in Texas at some . The biggest industry in Falfurrias is the United States Border Patrol interior checkpoint south of the city. Cuero ( ) is a city in and the county seat of DeWitt County, Texas, United States. Its population was 8,128 at the 2020 census. History The city of Cuero had its start in the mid-19th century as a stopping point on the Chisholm Trail cattle route to Kansas. It was not recognized as a town until 1873, though, when it was officially founded. The city was named for the Spanish word "hide", referring to the leather made from animal hides. The industry was extremely short-lived, however, and gave way to various forms of ranching. The city had several Old West gunfights related to clan feuding following the Civil War.
