The KH179 ("Korean howitzer 1 (first) 79") is a South Korean 155 mm towed howitzer of length 39 calibers, designed and developed by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) for the Republic of Korea Armed Forces, and is now manufactured by Hyundai WIA. Development The KH179 is a towed howitzer developed and produced by Kia Precision Industry (now Hyundai WIA) since 1983 for the purpose of replacing the U.S. M114A2 towed howitzer and enhancing artillery firepower. General characteristics The KH179 makes use of lightweight components (CN79 barrel, RM79 recoil buffer, and CG79 mount) and can be air-transported by CH-47 chinook helicopter and C-130 transport aircraft. In addition, performance improvements were made in range, reliability, and maintenance compared to conventional M114A2 howitzers operated by the South Korean military. HM-41
The HM-41 is an Iranian 155 mm howitzer based on the South Korean KH179, which was sold to Iran during the Iran–Iraq War. It has a 155 mm/39 caliber barrel with a muzzle brake to lessen the recoil. The HM-41 has been offered for export, but no country is known to be using it except Iran. Development A wheeled self-propelled version was reported to be under development. The first prototype was finished in 2011. In 2012, Iran unveiled laser guided Basir 155 mm artillery shells which were tested by an HM 41 howitzer. In 2017, a new version of the Iranian-made 155mm self-propelled howitzer dubbed (Ashura) is based on a 6x6 IVECO Trakker truck chassis using the same HM-41 towed howitzer mounted at the rear of the truck. The KH178 ("Korean Howitzer 1 (First) 78") is a South Korean 105 mm 38 caliber towed howitzer. The M198 is a medium-sized, towed 155 mm artillery piece, developed for service with the United States Army and Marine Corps. It was commissioned to be a replacement for the World War II-era M114 155 mm howitzer. It was designed and prototyped at the Rock Island Arsenal in 1969 with firing tests beginning in 1970 and went into full production there in 1978. It entered service in 1979 and since then 1,600 units have been produced. The M198 was replaced in US and Australian service by the M777 howitzer.
