KGNC-FM
KGNC-FM (97.9 MHz) is a radio broadcast station in Amarillo, Texas, United States. It is the oldest FM station in the Amarillo region. KGNC-FM airs a country music format. The station is owned by Alpha Media LLC. Studios for it and its partners are located in southwest Amarillo near the former Western Plaza shopping center. KGNC-FM is one of the stations responsible for the activation of the Emergency Alert System in the Amarillo area. Programming The station conducts an annual "Jude Country Cares Radiothon". History The current KGNC-FM is the second station to hold that call sign. The first KGNC-FM, also located in Amarillo, debuted on November 25, 1947, at 104.3 MHz, as the first FM station broadcasting in the Texas panhandle. KGNC (710 kHz) is an AM radio broadcast station in Amarillo, Texas, United States with a news/talk format. The station is owned by Alpha Media LLC. Studios for KGNC and its partners are located in southwest Amarillo near the former Western Plaza shopping center. KGNC's programming is also broadcast on 97.5 FM by translator K248DE in Amarillo. KGNC's transmitter site is located north of Amarillo in an unincorporated section of Potter County, and northeast of Amarillo in Carson County. KGNC operates fulltime with 10,000 watts, using different daytime and nighttime directional antennas. The station has a relatively large coverage area, due to its fairly high power and the surrounding area's good ground conductivity. KVWE (102.9 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a sports format. Licensed to Amarillo, Texas, United States, it serves the Amarillo area. The station is owned by Alpha Media. Its studios are located on Olsen Boulevard near Western Avenue in southwest Amarillo, and its transmitter is located near Farm Road 1719 and Loop 335 in northwest Amarillo. Originally KRGN-FM, it was sold by Family Life Radio to Midessa Broadcasting for $700,000. Then renamed to KEYU-FM, it was previously owned by Drewry Communications. On August 10, 2015, Raycom Media announced that it would purchase Drewry Communications for $160 million. The deal was completed on December 1, 2015. KEYU-FM, along with KTXC in Lamesa were Raycom's only radio stations since the company sold WMC AM- FM in Memphis, Tennessee to Infinity Broadcasting Corporation in 2000. Emergency Alert System
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) is a national warning system in the United States designed to allow authorized officials to broadcast emergency alerts and warning messages to the public via cable, satellite, or broadcast television, and both AM/ FM and satellite radio. The EAS became operational on January 1, 1997, after being approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in November 1994, replacing the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS).
