KESC
KESC (99.7 FM) is a non-commercial radio station that is licensed to Morro Bay, California, and broadcasts to the San Luis Obispo area. The station is owned by the University of Southern California (USC) and rebroadcasts the classical music format of KUSC in Los Angeles. History The station first signed on May 1, 1991, as KWWV and broadcast an adult contemporary music format. KWWV was acquired by Salisbury Broadcasting in 1994. The station changed its format to smooth jazz by 1998. In 1999, KWWV changed its call letters to KKAL and adopted a top 40 format as 99.7 KISS-FM modeled after KIIS-FM in Los Angeles In October 2006, Mapleton Communications announced that it was purchasing the station, then bearing the call letters KXTY, from Salisbury for $1 million. KUSC (91.5 FM broadcasting, FM; "Classical California™ KUSC") is a listener-supported european classical music, classical music radio station broadcasting from downtown Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, United States. KUSC is owned and operated by the University of Southern California, which also operates student-run Internet station KXSC (AM) and San Francisco's classical station KDFC. It is the largest non-profit classical music station in the country. History The station was one of the first radio stations to operate on the FM band when it officially signed on using the frequency of 91.7 on December 5, 1946. Its primary benefactor was George Allan Hancock. It operated out the Hancock Foundation building on the USC campus and broadcast from a 250 foot tower above the building. Morro Bay (''Morro'', Spanish for "Hill") is a seaside city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. Located on the Central Coast of California, the city's population was 10,757 as of the 2020 census, up from 10,234 at the 2010 census. Usually unlike dead air (broadcasting only silence), a station that is dark or silent does not even transmit a carrier wave, carrier signal. Mapleton owned and operated 41 radio stations (11 AM and 30 FM) in California, Oregon and Washington State. It was based in Monterey, California.
