KEPC (89.7 FM) is a radio station licensed to Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States, the station serves the Colorado Springs area, broadcasting a Public Radio Album Adult Alternative format. The station simulcasts KVOQ (FM) out of Denver, and is owned by Colorado Public Radio. History The station originally signed on at 90.5 in 1957 as KSHS which was owned by Colorado Springs School District 11 and operated out of the Colorado Springs High School which would soon change its name to Palmer High School after a second high school in the city was completed. The KSHS calls were given in honor of Palmer High's original name. KVOQ (FM)
KVOQ (102.3 FM) is a public radio station licensed to Greenwood Village, Colorado, and serving the Denver metropolitan area. KVOQ broadcasts an Album Adult Alternative (AAA) radio format known as "Indie 102.3" under the ownership of Colorado Public Radio. It is listener supported and airs no commercials. On-air fundraisers are conducted several times each year. A 40-watt booster station, 102.3 KVOQ-FM3, is on the air in Boulder to help listeners there better receive the station. It is also simulcast on KNDH (96.7 FM) in Carbondale and its four dependent translators, which CPR acquired in 2021. In January 2022, Indie 102.3 began to simulcast in Colorado Springs on KEPC (89.7 FM). KXRE (1490 kHz) is an AM radio station licensed to Manitou Springs, Colorado, the station serves the Colorado Springs radio market. The station is currently owned by Pikes Peak State College, known on-air as ''eXtra Music 102.1'', and all of the on-air personalities heard are Radio and Television students at the college, as experience at the radio station is a requirement for the Associates of Applied Science in Telecommunications Production degree offered by the school. The Colorado Springs School District 11 (District 11 or D-11) is the central school district of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Its headquarters are in that city. History The first school in Colorado Springs was organized by Mary Mellen "Queen" Palmer, wife of city founder William Jackson Palmer, in late 1871. Classes were first held in a home on the northeast corner of Cascade Avenue and Bijou Street, rented by Mrs. Palmer for the school. School District 11 was established in August 1872. The district enrollment passed 1000 by 1883 and stood at 1776 on opening day of the Colorado Springs High School building in 1893. (That building was razed in 1938 to make way for construction of Palmer High School.) Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is a public radio state network based in Denver, Colorado that broadcasts three services: news, classical music and Indie 102.3, which plays adult album alternative music.
