Dexter is a town in Chaves County, New Mexico. The population was 1,266 at the time of the 2010 census. Geography Dexter is located in south-central Chaves County at (33.196062, -104.370222), approximately west of the Pecos River. New Mexico State Road 2 passes through the town, leading northwest to Roswell, the county seat, and southeast to Hagerman. According to the United States Census Bureau, Dexter has a total area of , of which is land and , or 7.88%, is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,235 people, 390 households, and 333 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,681.2 people per square mile (653.2/km2).
