K731 White Shark
K731 White Shark () heavy torpedo is a submarine-launched torpedo developed by the Republic of Korea Navy in 2004. Production was delayed for a year after a program error in the guidance system resulted in 2 failed tests in 2003. This glitch was fixed while developing the lighter-weight Blue Shark torpedo. Production cost for each torpedo is at about 950 million won (US$790,000). K745A1 Red Shark
The K745A1 Red Shark () torpedo, also called the K-ASROC, is a vertically launched anti-submarine missile successively developed and tested by Korea University of Science and Technology, the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and the Republic of Korea Navy in 2009. The Red Shark missile has a range of and carries a K745 Blue Shark torpedo that is deployed by parachute near the intended target. After release, the Blue Shark independently searches for the target. The missiles are planned to be deployed on KDX-II and KDX-III destroyers starting in 2010. Each destroyer will carry between 8 (KDX-II) and 16 (KDX-III) of the missiles. The development cost of the program was around US$ 80 million, with a production cost of about $14 million. They were designed in order to combat the potential threat of North Korean submarines. The K745 Blue Shark () is a lightweight anti-submarine torpedo developed for the Republic of Korea Navy in 2004. Development The Blue Shark torpedo can be deployed from surface ships, ASW helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft. Production cost for each torpedo is at about ₩ 1,000,000,000. Blue Shark torpedoes are fitted to the Incheon class frigate (FFX). It is exported to the Philippines as part of the acquisition process for the Jose Rizal-class Frigates. Variants An improved variant, the lightweight torpedo-2 is being developed by LIG Nex1. New capabilities include longer range and lesser vulnerability to decoys.
