K. Lakshmana
K. Lakshmana is a Kerala Cadre Indian Police Service officer who retired as State Police Chief of Kerala Police in rank of Inspector General of Police. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by a CBI Special Court forty years later, in the case relating to the encounter killing of Arikkad Varghese in the Thirunelli forest in Wayanad on 18 February 1970 Delivering the judgment, CBI Special court judge S Vijay Kumar said the first accused in the case, late CRPF constable P Ramachandran Nair had committed the act of murder on the command of Lakshmana, the second accused, who was the then DYSP. Arikkad Varghese
Arikkad Varghese ( ml, അരിക്കാട് വർഗീസ്, 14 June 1938 - 18 February 1970), popularly known as Saghavu Varghese (സഖാവ് വർഗീസ്), was an Indian CPIML leader, who fought mainly to protect the Adivasis in Wayanad from the exploitation of the feudal lords who were primarily members of political parties and the police system which then aided the exploitation, during the 1960s. Arikkad Varghese is especially notable in the history of Kerala, for being murdered by the police in a fake encounter, and the truth of this incident which remained unknown for 40 years. After 40 years, the very policeman who fired the shot revealed to the world that he had murdered him, and called for a trial. In the course of the trial, the now-old policeman died before he could testify before the court. R. Jayaram Padikkal was an IPS officer. He had served as the Director General of Police (DGP), the highest rank in the force in the period 1993–94. Early years Jayaram Padikkal I.P.S. was born in Peruvemba village Palghat in Kerala as the son of an Indian Army officer and had his education in Pune. He was said to be a good hockey player and a voracious reader, especially history, crime and philosophy and later joined the Indian Police Service.
