Jessore ( bn, যশোর, jôshor, ), officially Jashore, is a city of Jessore District situated in Khulna Division. It is situated in the south-western part of Bangladesh. It is the administrative centre (headquarter) of the eponymous district and the third largest and second developed city in Khulna Division. It is one of the industrious and developed cities in Bangladesh and it is also the second developed city of Khulna Division. Jessore city consists of 9 wards and 73 mahalls. Jashore municipality was established in 1864. The area of the town is 21.15 km2. It has a population of about 2,98,000 according to the record of Jessore municipality. Jessore also has a domestic airport named as Jessore Airport.The city is named after the famous Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple which is a holy Shaktipeeth. Jashore Airport is a domestic airport in Jashore, Bangladesh. Operated and maintained by the Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh. It is also used by the Bangladesh Air Force as part of ''BAF Matiur Rahman Base'' and training airfield for the Bangladesh Air Force Academy.At present it has daily seven direct flight with Dhaka and a weekly flight with Cox's Bazar.It is the only operational airport of Khulna Division.It is the fifth busiest airport of Bangladesh. Jessore Zilla School
Jashore Zilla School is the fifth oldest school in Asia, the second oldest in Bangladesh, and the oldest school in Jashore southwest of Bangladesh. It was established on 3 February 1838 and named Jessore Zilla School after 1872. Though the school was established under a government order, it was founded with donations from local people. On 27 January 1845, the wife of the zamindar of Naldi Pargana made an annual grant of Tk 300 for running the school. Jessore Institute Public Library is a public library in Jessore Town founded in 1854. It is one of the oldest libraries in South Asia. History Jessore Public Library was founded in 1854 by R. C. Rex. the district tax collector, in a central location of Jessore Town. R. C. Rex received funding from the local elites such as the indigo planters and local zamindars of Narail and Naldanga. The library became a centre of social and literary gathering in Jessore. The library had a billiard room.
