Jānis Cimze
Jānis Cimze (3 July/21 June 1814 — 22 October/10 October 1881) was a Latvian pedagogue, collector and harmoniser of folk songs, organist, founder of Latvian choral music and initiator of professional Latvian music. He is buried at the Lugaži Cemetery. Early life Cimze was born at the Rauna Manor's Cimze dairy farm (hoflage) in the family of a manor's dairy farm overseer Andreas (Ansis) Cimze and his wife Anne as the first child of 8 for his parents. His initial education came from Rauna Parish School where he also learned to play the organ. From the age of sixteen he worked as a private tutor; later he was a teacher at Valmiera Parish School and an organist. Education In 1836 Cimze went to Germany to study at Weissenfels Teachers' Seminary which he finished in 1838. Jānis Čakste
Jānis Kristaps Čakste (; 14 September 1859 – 14 March 1927) was a Latvian politician and lawyer who served as the first head of an independent Latvian state as the Chairman of the Tautas Padome, People's Council (1918–1920), the Speaker of the Constitutional Assembly (1920–1922), and as the first President of Latvia (1922–1927). Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis
Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis (or ''Johann Friedrich Baumann'', May 23, 1834, Riga – March 19, 1891, Riga) was a Latvian, Baltic German architect. He was the first professional Latvian architect. Baumanis designed the Riga Circus in 1888. He was responsible for a number of important public buildings of eclectic design constructed in the second half of the 19th century in Riga. Biography Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis was born in 1834 in Riga, the son of a ferryman. In his youth he started work as a carpenter. In Riga he was spotted by the St. Petersburg architect Ludvig Bohnstedt. With his support Baumanis undertook studies in the ''Bauakademie'' in Berlin (1860–62) and in the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1862–65). Jānis Daliņš
Jānis Daliņš (5 November 1904 – 11 June 1978) was a Latvian race walker. Competing in the 50 km event he won a silver medal at the 1932 Olympics, becoming the first athlete to win an Olympic medal competing for Latvia. He also won the 1934 European title and set seven world records in the 1930s. At the 1936 Olympics he led the race at 30 km, but abandoned the race due to a leg injury. Biography Daliņš started late, and had his first competition at the age of 22. A few months later he set a Latvian record in the 5000 m walk. He finished second behind Ugo Frigerio in the 7 miles walk event and third behind Alf Pope in the 2 miles walk event at the 1931 AAA Championships. In 1932, he set his first world record, over the 25 mile distance and was later awarded the Order of the Three Stars 5th Class. Jānis Bulis (born 17 August 1950 in Briģi Parish, Ludza Municipality) is a Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Rēzekne-Aglona in Latvia. Biography Jānis Bulis was born on 17 August 1950 in Briģi Parish, Ludza Municipality, Latvia. After his secondary education, he entered in the Riga's Metropolitan Roman Catholic Theological Seminary in 1972, from which he finished in 1977. The same year, on May 22, 1977, he was ordained to the priesthood at St. James's Cathedral in Riga by Cardinal Julijans Vaivods. Bulis' first religious services occurred on June 5, 1977 at the Holy Trinity Church in Briģi. On May 8, 1991, Bulis was nominated to become bishop, being consecrated in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Liepāja on June 24 the same year. Jānis Bērziņš (born 4 May 1993) is a Latvian professional basketball player for Górnik Wałbrzych of the Polish Basketball League (PLK). Standing at he plays at the small forward position. Professional career Jānis Bērziņš who in childhood was raised in Latvian most northern town Rūjiena started his professional career in 2009 with BK Valmiera. Jānis Akuraters
Jānis Akuraters (13 January 1876 – 25 July 1937) was a Latvian poet, writer, playwright and politician. He founded the Latvian National Theatre in 1919 and was director of Radio of Riga between 1930 and 1934. Biography Akuraters was born on 13 January 1876 in Dignāja parish ''Jaunzemji'' homestead (Modern Jēkabpils municipality). His father was a forester. Akuraters studied in a Birži primary school and later in the Jēkabpils city school. After graduation, he passed the teachers exam and started work in schools. 1898 in Elkšņi, 1899–1901 in Jumurda and 1902 in Riga. Jānis Balodis (20 February 1881 – 8 August 1965) was an army general, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Latvia (1919–1921), Minister of War (1931–1940), and a politician who was one of the principal figures during the Latvian War of Independence and the dictatorship of Kārlis Ulmanis, when he was officially the number two of the regime as the Minister of War, Deputy Prime Minister and Vice President. Jānis Brikmanis (25 February 1940 – 18 April 2019) was a Latvian zoologist, environmental conservationist, radio and television presenter, and writer. Jānis Bebris
Jānis Anatolijs Bebris (28 July 1917 – 2 May 1969) was a Latvian footballer and ice hockey player. He was the main goalkeeper of Latvia national football team in the closing years of the 1930s, and represented Latvia at the 1936 Winter Olympics. After World War II, Bebris played in West Germany and France. Biography Bebris started playing football at the age of 16. Because of his then fragile body, he was immediately assigned the post of the goalkeeper. Playing with Union Riga Bebris soon attracted the attention of the national football team management, soon he moved to a stronger Riga club – Rīgas Vilki.
