Just A Dash
Just A Dash (1977 – 2 November 2012) was a notable Australian Thoroughbred racehorse, who won the 1981 Melbourne Cup. He was sired by Whiskey Road (USA). His dam Native Lass (AUS) was by Caranna (AUS). The horse won the race by 2 ¼ lengths providing Tommy J. Smith, T. J. Smith with just his second Melbourne Cup. He was ridden by Peter Cook (jockey), Peter Cook whose father Billy Cook (jockey), Billy Cook had himself ridden two previous winners of the race. Just A Dash was also victorious in the 1981 South Australian Jockey Club, SAJC Adelaide Cup and the SAJC St. Leger Stakes. Leading up to the Cup he had placed: * 7th in the Herbert Power Stakes, Herbert Power Handicap behind Flashing Light * 6th in the Caulfield Cup behind Silver Bounty * 5th in the Lexus Stakes, Dalgety Handicap behind Mr Cromwell He was put down at Willow Dene Stud near Wollongong at the age of 35 in late 2012. Nijinsky (21 February 1967 – 15 April 1992) was a Canadian-bred, Irish-trained champion Thoroughbred horse-racing, racehorse and Horse breeding, sire. He was the outstanding two-year-old in Europe in 1969 when he was unbeaten in five races. In the following season, he became the first horse for thirty-five years to win the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing#English Triple Crowns, English Triple Crown, a feat that has not been repeated as of 2024. Billy Cook (jockey)
William Henry Cook (12 January 191029 January 1985) was an Australian jockey. Career Billy earned the nickname "Last-Race Cookie" following his riding of the winner in the last race 13 Saturdays in succession in Sydney. He was also known as "The Champ", due to his exquisite riding skills. He won six Sydney jockeys' premierships during a distinguished career riding in Australia and overseas. Some of the achievements during his career included winning the 1941 and 1945 Melbourne Cups (Skipton and Rainbird), the 1930 Caulfield Cup ( Amounis), the 1953 Sydney Cup (Carioca), and the 1954 CB Fisher Plate ( Rising Fast).
