Junko Tabei
was a Japanese mountaineer, author and a teacher. She was the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest and the first woman to ascend the Seven Summits, climbing the highest peak on every continent. Tabei wrote seven books, organized environmental projects to clean up rubbish left behind by climbers on Everest, and led annual climbs up Mount Fuji for youth affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. She is emerita research professor of linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she served as chair of the department from 1999-2006. Itō received her Ph.D. in Linguistics in 1986 from the University of Massachusetts Amherst under the supervision of Alan Prince. Itō's research focuses on phonology and morphology. was a Japanese high school student who was abducted, raped, tortured and then subsequently murdered. Her case was called the , due to her body being discovered in a concrete drum.
