Junk (nightclub)
Junk Club (commonly known as Junk) was a monthly underground club night held in the basement of the Royal Hotel in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England, from 2002 to 2006. Founded by Oliver Abbott, Rhys "Spider" Webb (of The Horrors), and graphic artist Ciaran O'Shea, it played a key role in shaping the local post-punk and garage rock revival scene. The club served as a launching pad for several influential bands including The Horrors and These New Puritans. Origins The first Junk night was held in September 2002. Abbott and Webb, enthusiasts of 1960s Mod culture, joined forces with O'Shea, whose background in design and jungle raves helped shape the night’s aesthetic. The Royal Hotel’s basement location provided an underground atmosphere that resonated with Southend’s isolated, obsessive subculture. The Horrors
The Horrors are an English Rock music, rock band formed in Southend-on-Sea in 2005 by lead vocalist Faris Badwan, guitarist Joshua Hayward, keyboardist and synthesizer player Tom Furse, bassist Rhys Webb, and drummer and percussionist Joe Spurgeon. Their music has been classified as garage rock, Garage punk (fusion genre), garage punk, gothic rock, shoegaze and post-punk revival. The band's current lineup includes all of the founding members bar Furse and Spurgeon, who have been inactive performing live since 2021 and 2024, respectively. In early October 2024, it was announced that the band were now joined by Amelia Kidd (of The Ninth Wave (band), the Ninth Wave) on keyboards and backing vocals, as well as Jordan Cook (of Telegram) on drums. Ciaran O'Shea
Ciaran O’Shea (also known professionally as Discordo) is a British graphic designer, art director, and artist. He is known for his influential work in club culture design, album artwork, and curatorial projects rooted in music and youth subculture, often collaborating with photographer Dean Chalkley. These New Puritans are an English band from Southend-on-Sea, England. It consists mainly of Jack Barnett (principal songwriter, vocalist, producer, multi-instrumentalist) and his twin brother George Barnett (drums, electronics, producer, artwork). Multi-instrumentalist Thomas Hein was an active member of TNP between 2006 and 2016; keyboardist Sophie Sleigh-Johnson was active between 2006 and 2010. Neils Children
Neils Children are an England, English rock band, formed in 1999 in Harlow, Essex, England, by lead singer and guitarist John Linger, drummer Brandon Jacobs and bassist Tom Hawkins. The band were originally based in their hometown of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and were based around the nucleus of Linger and Jacobs who continued the band with a number of different bass players. The Violets
The Violets were an English post punk/ indie/ pop band from the New Cross area of London, England. Formed initially as a bassless garage punk trio, The Violets early gigs saw them playing stark, spiky and minimalist punk that evoked early art-school punk bands such as Delta 5, Prag Vec, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as more contemporary acts such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The band formed when guitarist Joe met vocalist Alexis in a tea room in Pinner, a suburb in North West London, and the pair discovered a shared affinity with emotive, brash and confrontational music. The pair soon wrote a song 'Laxteen', which was recorded in a studio owned by Scott Rosenthal in New York. Scott also played drums on the track. Kap Bambino
Kap Bambino is a French electronic music duo created in 2001 by Orion Bouvier and Caroline Martial in Bordeaux, France. Style and themes The group is known for Caroline Martial's wild vocals, Orion Bouvier's intense electronic beats, and their exciting live performances.
