Jungle Drums (radio Serial)
''Jungle Drums'' is a 1937 Australian radio serial by Maxwell Dunn. It was his first radio drama and was very popular, launching his career. The serial replaced ''As Ye Sow'' as the ABC's national serial. Dunn followed it with other serials, ''Light Sinister'', ''The Highest Command'' and ''Moon Magic (radio serial), Moon Magic''. The latter was also set in Africa. Premise "An English party which embarks on an expedition to darkest Africa, to discover the whereabouts of the long-loet father of the heroine. The chief characters are Edward Gordon, a noted African explorer; his friend, the honourable Terry Clare, Earl of Truscott and Inverness, wbo finances the expedition; Jill Trelawney, the heroine; and Dr. Quintin Vaughan, an authority on African native customs, who quickly reveal himself as the villain of the piece. Maxwell Dunn
Maxwell Dunn (1916–65) was an Australian writer and producer of radio, films and prose. Dunn was born in Launceston, Tasmania. He did a variety of jobs, including as an insurance agent and began writing for radio. Dunn became production manager for the Macquarie network where he wrote and adapted numerous plays, serials and documentaries. In 1951, Dunn left Australia to become Programme Director of Film Television with the United Nations Organisation. He worked for ten years in New York and New Delhi then returned to Australia shortly before his death in 1965. Dunn's papers are at the University of Queensland. ''As Ye Sow'' is a 1937 Australian radio serial by Edmund Barclay Edmund Piers Barclay (2 May 1898 – 26 August 1961) was an English-Australian writer known for his work in radio drama. Radio historian Richard Lane called him "Australian radio's first great writer and, many would say, Australian radio's g .... It told the story of six generations of Australians in early colonial Australia. It was "regarded by many critics as the greatest contribution to Australian historical drama." ''The Macleay Argus ''is an English-language newspaper published twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday, in Kempsey, New South Wales, Australia. In 1952 it absorbed ''The Macleay Chronicle'', which had been in publication since 1878. History ''The Macleay Argus'' commenced publication in 1885. Its circulation included the Hastings, Manning, Camden Haven, Rollands Plains, Upper Macleay and the Northern Coast districts. ''The Macleay Chronicle'' was published in Kempsey from 1878-1952. In 1892 it circulated to 1500 people in the district. From 1910 it was published by Edward Patrick Noonan, whose son Harry also worked for the paper. After Edward's death, the ''Chronicle'' was run by his three daughters Ethel Margaret, Dorothy and Vivienne until 1952. The paper was then absorbed by the ''Macleay Argus''. ''The Queenslander'' was the weekly summary and literary edition of the ''Brisbane Courier'', the leading journal in the colony (later state) of Queensland since the 1850s. ''The Queenslander'' was launched by the Brisbane Newspaper Company in 1866, and discontinued in 1939. History ''The Queenslander'' was first published on 3 February 1866 in Brisbane by Thomas Blacket Stephens. The last edition was printed on 22 February 1939. In a country the size of Australia, a daily newspaper of some prominence could only reach the bush and outlying districts if it also published a weekly edition.
