June Wayne
June Claire Wayne (March 7, 1918 – August 23, 2011) was an American painter, printmaker, tapestry innovator, educator, and activist. She founded Tamarind Lithography Workshop (1960–1970), a then California-based nonprofit print shop dedicated to lithography. Early life and career Wayne was born in Chicago on March 7, 1918, to Dorothy Alice Kline and Albert Lavine, but the marriage ended shortly after Wayne's birth and she was raised by her single mother and grandmother, both refugees from the violent antisemitism and pogroms of Belarus and Imperial Russia. Wayne had aspirations to be an artist and dropped out of high school at the age of fifteen to pursue this goal. Tamarind Institute
Tamarind Institute is a lithography workshop created in 1970 as a division of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, United States. It began as Tamarind Lithography Workshop, a California non-profit corporation founded by June Wayne on Tamarind Avenue in Los Angeles in 1960. Both the current Institute and the original Lithography Workshop are referred to informally as "Tamarind." Garo Antreasian
Garo Zareh Antreasian (1922 – 2018) was an American printmaker and educator. He was one of the co-founders of the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, California. Biography Antreasian was born on February 16, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to an Armenian family. His parents had survived the Armenian genocide of 1915. Antreasian attended Arsenal Technical High School, where he was introduced to lithography. He studied at the Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis. He moved to New York in 1948 where he studied at Atelier 17 and the Art Students League of New York. Clinton Adams
Clinton Adams (December 11, 1918 – May 13, 2002) was an American artist and art historian. He was known for his contributions to the field of lithography. Biography Adams was born in Glendale, California. He worked in the art department of the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA) but eventually left to serve in the military. He returned to UCLA in 1946. From 1961 to 1976, he was the Dean of the University of New Mexico. As a painter, Adams worked in several mediums, including oil, acrylic, watercolor painting, and egg tempera. He also produced lithographs, and was the co-author of ''The Tamarind Book of Lithography'' (1971), an important description of the process. Among his other writings is ''American Lithographers'' (1987), a history of the art in the United States from 1900 to 1960.
