June Lake (California)
June Lake is a subalpine lake within the Inyo National Forest, in Mono County, eastern California. It is at an elevation of in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Geography It is located north from Mammoth Lakes and south from Lee Vining, California. It is one of the four lakes (June Lake, Gull Lake, Silver Lake & Grant Lake) inside the June Lake Loop. It is located about south of the southern end of Mono Lake following U.S. Route 395 and then west on State Route 158. Activities Fishing is considered one of the favorite summer sports. A small population of Lahontan cutthroat trout can be found in June Lake. In the 1960s rainbow trout were plentiful. There are two marinas at June Lake: June Lake Marina and Big Rock Resort. Inyo National Forest
Inyo National Forest is a United States National Forest covering parts of the eastern Sierra Nevada of California and the White Mountains of California and Nevada. The forest hosts several superlatives, including Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States; Boundary Peak, the highest point in Nevada; and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, which protects the oldest living trees in the world. Lee Vining (formerly Leevining, Poverty Flat, and Lakeview) is an Unincorporated area#United States, unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Mono County, California, United States. It is located south-southeast of Bridgeport, California, Bridgeport. Lee Vining is located on the southwest shore of Mono Lake. The population was 217 as of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. History The town was named after Leroy Vining, who founded the town in 1852 as a mining camp. In 1926, the town was laid out by Chris Mattly and named "Lakeview", but when a post office was sought in 1928, it was learned that another town, Lakeview, California, already had the name. California State Route 158
State Route 158 (SR 158) is a state highway in the U.S. state of California. Known as the June Lake Loop, it is a loop route of U.S. Route 395 in Mono County that serves the community of June Lake. Route description The route is a loop west off of U.S. Route 395 passing through the community of June Lake, following the watercourse of June Lake, Gull Lake, Reversed Creek, Silver Lake, Rush Creek and Grant Lake, into the Mono Basin. The highway provides access to several vacation areas, trailheads, and scenic locations, including the June Mountain ski and snowboard resort. SR 158 from north of June Lake to the northern junction with U.S. Highway 395 is closed during winters, typically from mid-December through mid-April. Mono Lake
Mono Lake ( ) is a Salt lake, saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes Hypersaline lake, high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake which make its water alkalinity, alkaline. The desert lake has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp, which thrive in its waters, and provides critical habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp and alkali flies (''Ephydra hians''). Historically, the native Kucadikadi, Kutzadika'a people ate the alkali flies' pupae, which live in the shallow waters around the edge of the lake. When the city of Los Angeles diverted water from the freshwater streams flowing into the lake, it lowered the lake level, which imperiled the Bird migration, migratory birds. Mammoth Lakes
Mammoth Lakes is the only incorporated town in Mono County, California, United States. It is located immediately to the east of Mammoth Mountain, at an elevation of .
