Junction City Soldiers
The Junction City Soldiers were an American minor league baseball team founded in 1909 in the Central Kansas League. After the 1912 season, the Central Kansas League was renamed the Kansas State League. The team cased operations in 1913. Notable former players include Al Bashang and Jimmy Whelan. There is a longstanding controversy regarding whether former US President Dwight D. Eisenhower played professional baseball for the Soldiers. The Junction City Soldiers were preceded by the 1897 Junction City Parrots, who played as members of the Kansas State League. Kansas State League
The Kansas State League was a minor league baseball league in the United States that operated in the state of Kansas in the late 19th century and into the early 20th century. History The Kansas State League was first established in 1887 as a Minor League Baseball "no classification" league and existed for that year only. The league continued again and played in 1895 to 1896 as a "no classification" league. Progressing into the 20th century, the circuit played in 1905–1906 as a class D league and this stint lasted two years. The last segment of the league operated as a class D league from 1909–1911, and 1913–1914. The original Kansas State League ceased operation in 1911, merged with the Central Kansas League, and the 1912 season was played under the CKL name. In 1913, the CKL switched back to the Kansas State League name. After the 1914 season the league permanently disbanded. The Central Kansas League was a Class D level baseball league established in 1908, playing through 1912. Member teams were based exclusively in Kansas. The Central Kansas League evolved from and into the Kansas State League. History The original Kansas State League ceased independent operations in 1911, combined with the Central Kansas League. After five seasons of play, the Central Kansas League subsequently changed its name to back to the Kansas State League for the 1913 and 1914 seasons before disestablishing. Al Bashang
Albert C. "Ollie" Bashang, sometimes written as "Al Baschang" (August 22, 1888 – June 23, 1967) was an American baseball outfielder and manager. He played professional baseball for 18 years from 1910 to 1927, including two brief stints in Major League Baseball with the Detroit Tigers in 1912 and the Brooklyn Robins in 1918. He also served as manager of the Evansville Evas from 1920 to 1921. Early years Bashang was born in 1888 in Cincinnati. Professional baseball Bashang appeared in six games for the Detroit Tigers in July 1912 and two games for the Brooklyn Robins in 1918. The Eisenhower baseball controversy refers to the allegations that the former general and President of the United States, Dwight Eisenhower, played minor league baseball for the Junction City Soldiers in the Central Kansas League the year before he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. The story goes that he did so under the assumed name of "Wilson." The question of whether Dwight Eisenhower played minor-league baseball is not well documented and is subject to various interpretations. Kansas () is a state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita.
