Julius Caesar (album)
''Julius Caesar'' is the third album by Bill Callahan (musician), Bill Callahan (also known as Smog), released in 1993 on Drag City (record label), Drag City. It was re-released in Europe in 2001 on Domino Recording Company, Domino Records. After his two first LPs, which were recorded at home with an experimental lo-fi music, lo-fi approach, Callahan decided to record this album in a professional studio. Nevertheless, he kept control over the recording process, with only Kim Osterwalder helping out on cello. The song "One Less Star" appeared in ''David Blaine#Above the Below, Above the Below'', a 2003-documentary about a stunt by David Blaine. "Chosen One (Smog song), Chosen One" was covered live by The Flaming Lips in a record store in Minneapolis on December 12, 1993, a recording which later appeared on their EP ''Due to High Expectations... the Flaming Lips Are Providing Needles for Your Balloons''. Smog (band)
Bill Callahan (born June 3, 1966) is an American singer-songwriter, who has also recorded and performed under the band name Smog. Callahan began working in the lo-fi music, lo-fi genre, with home-made tape-albums recorded on four-track tape recorders. Later he began releasing albums with the label Drag City (record label), Drag City, to which he remains signed today. Career Callahan started out as a highly experimental artist, using substandard instruments and recording equipment. His early songs lacked melodic structure and were clumsily played on poorly tuned guitars, resulting in the dissonant sounds on his self-released cassettes and debut album ''Sewn to the Sky''. Much of his early output was instrumental, a stark contrast to the lyrical focus of his later work. His use of lo-fi techniques was not primarily an aesthetic preference, but stemmed from his lack of resources to make and record music. "Chosen One" is a song by Smog on his ''Julius Caesar'' album. Since its release it has been covered several times, including a version by The Flaming Lips in a Minneapolis record store on December 12, 1993, a recording which later appeared on their EP '' Due to High Expectations... the Flaming Lips Are Providing Needles for Your Balloons''. German indie-pop singer Monta has also covered "Chosen One" during concerts, but the material remains unreleased. Kill Rock Stars
Kill Rock Stars is an independent record label founded in February 1991 by Slim Moon and Tinuviel Sampson, and based in both Olympia, Washington, and Portland, Oregon. The label has released a variety of work in different genres, but it was originally known for its commitment to underground punk rock bands and the Olympia area music scene. History Sampson and Moon initially started the label because, in Moon's words, "I just wanted to put out my friends' records because nobody was putting out my friends' records. John Peel
John Robert Parker Ravenscroft (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004), better known as John Peel, was an English radio presenter and journalist. He was the longest-serving of the original disc jockeys on BBC Radio 1, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004. Peel was one of the first broadcasters to play psychedelic rock and progressive rock records on British radio. He is widely acknowledged for promoting artists of many genres, including pop, dub reggae, punk rock and post-punk, electronic music and dance music, indie rock, extreme metal and British hip hop. The Flaming Lips
The Flaming Lips are an American psychedelic rock band formed in 1983 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. David Blaine (born David Blaine White; April 4, 1973) is an American magician, mentalist, and Endurance art, endurance performer. Born in New York City, Blaine became interested in magic at a very young age.
