Julia Matthews
Julia Matthews or Julia Mathews (14 December 1842 – 19 May 1876) was an English actress and singer who was popular on the stage, particularly in Melbourne. Life Matthews was born in London in 1842. Her parents were Sarah (born Irviner) and James Mathews. Her father was a sailor who also made artificial flowers. The family moved to Sydney where she made her debut on the stage of the Royal Victoria Theatre. She received and refused a marriage proposal from Robert O'Hara Burke in 1860, shortly before the Burke and Wills expedition. Burke had made her his sole heir. She was one of the first to call for a search party. Matthews died aged just 33, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was played by Greta Scacchi in ''Burke & Wills'' (1985) and by Nicole Kidman in '' Wills & Burke'' (1985). The Sydney Mail
''The Sydney Mail'' was an Australian magazine published weekly in Sydney. It was the weekly edition of ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' newspaper and ran from 1860 to 1938. History ''The Sydney Mail'' was first published on 17 July 1860 by John Fairfax and Sons. In 1871 the magazine was renamed for the first time, and it was published as ''The Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser'' from 1871 to 1912. In 1912 it reverted to its original name, ''The Sydney Mail'', and was published under this masthead until 28 December 1938 when the magazine ceased publication. It was published on a weekly basis and became known for its illustrations. Jessie Matthews
Jessie Margaret Matthews (11 March 1907 – 19 August 1981) was an English actress, dancer and singer of the 1920s and 1930s, whose career continued into the post-war period. After a string of hit stage musicals and films in the mid-1930s, such as ''Evergreen'', Matthews developed a following in the USA, where she was dubbed "The Dancing Divinity". Her British studio was reluctant to let go of its biggest name, however, which resulted in offers for her to work in Hollywood being repeatedly rejected. ''Wills & Burke'' (also known as ''The Wacky World of Wills & Burke'' and ''Wills & Burke: The Untold Story'') is a 1985 Australian black comedy film about the Burke and Wills expedition. It opened a week before ''Burke & Wills'', a serious drama about the expedition. Plot In 1860, Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills are chosen to explore the Australian continent from south to north and back again. Just before the expedition departs, Burke proposes to young actress Julia Matthews, who has trouble remembering who he is.
