Judy MacMillan
Robert "Judy" Gordon MacMillan (3 April 1865 – 3 April 1936) was a Scottish international rugby union player. Rugby Union career Amateur career MacMillan played club rugby for Edinburgh University, West of Scotland and London Scottish. Provincial career MacMillan was capped by Glasgow District to play in the inter-city on 3 December 1887. He was selected for Middlesex to play against Yorkshire in the 1893 English County Championship. Five Scots were selected for Middlesex: Gregor MacGregor, George Campbell, William Wotherspoon, MacMillan and Frederick Goodhue, all with London Scottish who played in the county. He played in that match, but Yorkshire won and then secured the championship. On 22 December 1894 he played for the Provinces District against the Cities District side. British Newspaper Archive
The British Newspaper Archive website provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library's Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves. The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU; ) is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Now marketed as Scottish Rugby, it is the second-oldest Rugby Union, having been founded in 1873. President Of The Scottish Rugby Union
The president of the Scottish Rugby Union is the figurehead of rugby union in Scotland. Origin In 1873, and directly after the Scotland versus England international match, representatives from eight Scottish rugby union sides came together in Glasgow at the Glasgow Academy in Elmbank Street. They decided to form an organisation to develop the sport in Scotland. It was initially called the Scottish Football Union, but changed its name to the Scottish Rugby Union to give clarity from association football. They had a number of initial aims:- to help promote a cup competition; to bring closer working between the Scottish clubs; and to form a committee so that the Scotland international team could be picked. 1891 British Lions Tour To South Africa
The 1891 British Isles tour to South Africa was the first British Isles rugby union tour of South Africa and only the second overseas tour conducted by a joint British team. Between 9 July and 7 September, the team played 20 games, including three Tests against the South Africa national rugby union team. The British Isles not only won all three Test matches, but also won all 17 provincial games. Although not named as such at the time, the tour is retrospectively recognised as a British Lions tour. Tour details After the South African Rugby Board was formed in 1889, the committee decided one of the best ways to promote the game was to invite a British side to visit, similar to the British Isles tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1888. Frederick Goodhue
Frederick William Jervis Goodhue (26 April 1867 – 30 December 1940) was a former Scotland international rugby union player. He played club rugby for St. Thomas' and London Scottish. Personal history Goodhue was born in London, Canada West in 1867 to Charles Frederic Goodhue, and was educated at London School before being sent to Scotland to study at Merchiston Castle School. He matriculated to Caius College, Cambridge in 1885, competing his BA in 1890. After leaving Cambridge, Goodhue followed a medical career beginning his training at St Thomas' Hospital. Goodhue later took a position as Assistant House physician at the Hospital for Women at Soho Square, then Clinical Assistant at Evelina Children's Hospital. By 1898 he was practicing in Watford. Goodhue enlisted into the Royal Fusiliers ( 23rd Sportsmen Battalion) in 1914, when World War I began, as a private. His profession was a physician being a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. William Wotherspoon (rugby Union)
William Wotherspoon (2 May 1868 – 19 August 1942) was a Scottish rugby union half-back who was a member of the first official British Isles tour and was also capped for the Scotland team. Wotherspoon played one game in the 1891 Championship, which saw Scotland win all three matches making Wotherspoon a Triple Crown winning player. Personal history Wotherspoon was born in Aberdour, Fife in 1868 to Charles Grey Wotherspoon, a barrister of Aberdour. Wotherspoon was educated at Loretto School before being accepted into Clare College, Cambridge in 1887, gaining a BA in 1891. He came back to Fife to play cricket for Burntisland, with his brother. A sometimes Assistant Master of Blairlodge School in Stirlingshire (which is today a Young Offenders Institute), Wotherspoon became a barrister for Nobel's explosive factory in London.
