Judi Singh
Judi Singh (May 9, 1945 – July 18, 2021), sometimes spelled Judy Singh, was a Canadian jazz musician based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She was born to Indian and Black parents, making her a biracial person. Early life and family Judi was one of seven children born to Sohan Singh Bhullar and Effie Jones. Her father was a Punjabi Sikh who moved to Canada from India in 1907, becoming one of the first Indo-Canadians in Alberta; a park in Edmonton's Mill Woods neighbourhood is named in his honour. Her mother's family were among the earliest Black families to settle in Alberta, helping to found the historic settlement of Amber Valley, Alberta, Amber Valley. South Asian and Black marriages were not uncommon at the time as both groups faced marginalization. Canadian Music Hall Of Fame
The Canadian Music Hall of Fame was established in 1978 by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) to honour Canadian musicians for their lifetime achievements in music. The award presentation is held each year as part of the Juno Award ceremonies. Since 2012, the inductee also performs at the ceremony, almost always as the final performer. A hall facility was opened in Calgary in 2016 located within The National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta. It can be found on level five of the Studio Bell, a floor entirely dedicated to celebrating and recognizing Canadian music creators and artists who have left their mark on this country and beyond. Canadian jazz refers to the jazz and jazz-related music performed by jazz bands and performers in Canada. There are hundreds of local and regionally based Canadian jazz bands and performers. A number of Canadian jazz artists have achieved international prominence, including Oscar Peterson, Maynard Ferguson, and Gil Evans. History Early history The first jazz concert in Canada was by the touring Creole Orchestra and Ragtime Band, led by Bill Johnson and featuring cornetist Freddie Keppard at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 21, 1914. A few days later the band performed at Edmonton. The Winnipeg concert was the first jazz performance outside the United States and the beginning of jazz as an international movement.
