The Jubilee Party of Kenya is a major political party in Kenya. It has significantly influenced the country's political landscape since its founding on 8 September 2016. Emerging from a merger of 11 smaller parties, including The National Alliance (TNA) led by then-President Uhuru Kenyatta and the United Republican Party (URP) led by then-Deputy President William Ruto, Jubilee quickly became the ruling party. It secured a strong plurality in Parliament during the 2017 elections, cementing its dominance as Uhuru Kenyatta won re-election as president. However, internal divisions surfaced soon after the 2017 election. President Kenyatta criticized Deputy President Ruto for "kutangatanga" (loitering around), accusing him of prioritizing political campaigns over his responsibilities. Uhuru Kenyatta
Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta ( born 26 October 1961) is a Kenyan politician who served as the fourth president of Kenya from 2013 to 2022. The son of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president, he previously served as Prime Minister of Kenya, Deputy Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. Daniel Arap Moi had picked Kenyatta as his preferred successor. However, he was defeated by the then opposition leader Mwai Kibaki in the 2002 Kenyan general election, 2002 election, and Kibaki was subsequently sworn in as the President. Kenyatta served as the member of parliament (MP) for Gatundu South Constituency, Gatundu South from 2002 to 2013 and also as Deputy Prime Minister to Raila Odinga from 2008 to 2013. Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party, popularly referred to as Azimio la Umoja ( Swahili for "Resolution for Unity"), or simply Azimio, is a Kenyan political alliance and party headed by Raila Odinga. The Chama Cha Uzalendo (, CCU) is a Kenyan political party established in 2004. The party is currently headed by Maur Bwanamaka. The United Democratic Forum Party (UDF) was a political party in Kenya. History The party was founded in 2012, by a cross section of younger members of Kenya's 10th parliament under the premise of steering reforms to Kenya's governance and boosting economic growth. Its members included Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi. Prior to the 2013 general elections the party joined the Amani Coalition, which nominated the Mudavadi as its presidential candidate. In the elections Mudavadi came third in the presidential contest with 4% of the vote, whilst the UDF won three seats in the Senate and twelve in the National Assembly. The New Forum for the Restoration of Democracy–Kenya, commonly known as New Ford Kenya was a political party in Kenya. History The party was established in December 2006 by 12 MPs from FORD-Kenya. The new party did not put forward a presidential candidate in the 2007 general elections, but won two seats in the National Assembly. In 2011 Eugene Wamalwa joined the party and announced plans to be the party's presidential candidate in the 2013 general elections. This created an interest in the party in his native Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties, and by October 2012, the party had registered 67,345 members and won three civic seats in Bungoma and Trans Nzoia. United Republican Party (Kenya)
The United Republican Party (URP) was a political party in Kenya. History The party was launched by William Ruto, in conjunction with several Kenyan politicians allied to a faction of Orange Democratic Movement opposed to Raila Odinga, as their vehicle for the March 2013 general elections. The party's launch was announced after a week of meetings on 15 January 2012. In December, Ruto and the leaders of several other political parties signed a pre-election coalition deal, in which he became a running mate for Uhuru Kenyatta and URP received half the spoils of an election victory. The party subsequently joined the Jubilee Alliance, which nominated Kenyatta for the presidency. In the elections Kenyatta was elected president, whilst the URP emerged as the third-largest party in Parliament, winning 12 seats in the Senate and 76 in the National Assembly. Kenyan General Election, 2017
General elections were held in Kenya on 8 August 2017 to elect the President, members of the National Assembly and Senate. They coincided with the 2017 Kenyan local elections which elected Governors and representatives in the devolved governments. The published results showed that incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee Party had been re-elected with 54% of the vote. However, his main opponent, Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement, refused to accept the results and contested them in the Supreme Court. The results of the presidential election were subsequently annulled by the court and fresh presidential elections was ordered to be held within 60 days. It was later announced that the elections would be held in October. The results of the parliamentary and local elections remained valid.
