Juan Vila
Juan Vila (12 November 1961) is a Spanish sailor who has competed in multiple America's Cups and Whitbread Round the World Races. Born in Barcelona, Vila sailed in the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race on the Spanish entry, '' Fortuna Extra Lights''. He then competed in the 1993–94 event on '' Galicia '93 Pescanova'', the 1997–98 event with ''Chessie Racing'', and the 2001–02 event on ''Illbruck Challenge''. ''Illbruck Challenge'' won the event, now renamed as the Volvo Ocean Race. He was the first Spanish sailor to win the trophy. He then joined Alinghi and was their navigator during the successful defence of the 2007 America's Cup. He sailed as navigator on ''Alinghi 5'' when it lost the 2010 America's Cup. He sailed with ''Banque Populaire V'' when it won the Jules Verne Trophy in 2012. The team had to abandon an earlier attempt at the record in 2011. The sport of sailing involves a variety of competitive sailing formats that are sanctioned through various sailing federations and yacht clubs. Racing disciplines include matches within a fleet of sailing craft, between a pair thereof or among teams. Additionally, there are specialized competitions that include setting speed records. Racing formats include both closed courses and point-to-point contests; they may be in sheltered waters, coast-wise or on the open ocean. Jules Verne Trophy
The Jules Verne Trophy is a prize for the fastest circumnavigation of the world by any type of yacht with no restrictions on the size of the crew provided the vessel has registered with the organization and paid an entry fee. A vessel holding the Jules Verne trophy will not necessarily hold the absolute round the world record. The trophy was first awarded to the first yacht which sailed around the world in less than 80 days. The name of the award is a reference to the Jules Verne novel ''Around the World in Eighty Days'' in which Phileas Fogg traverses the planet (albeit by railroad and steamboat) in 80 days. The current holder is ''IDEC Sport'' skippered by Francis Joyon in 40 days 23 hours 30 minutes 30 seconds. 2017 America's Cup
The 2017 America's Cup was the 35th staging of the America's Cup yacht race. The challenger, Emirates Team New Zealand, won by a score of 7 to 1 over the defender, Oracle Team USA. It was held on the Great Sound in Bermuda from June 17 to June 26. The races were conducted using hydrofoiling AC50 America's Cup Class yachts, which are slightly larger than the AC45F yachts used in the 2015–16 America's Cup World Series. It was Oracle's second defence of the America's Cup, four years after its first successful defence. Emirates Team New Zealand defended the cup in the 36th America's Cup. Oracle Team USA is an American yacht racing syndicate initially formed to compete for the 2003 America's Cup. They competed again in the 2007 event before winning the 33rd America's Cup regatta in 2010 – representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club. The team also won the 34th America's Cup in 2013. The syndicate was initially named ''Oracle'' for the 2003 campaign and backed primarily by Larry Ellison, the co-founder and CEO of Oracle Corporation, but was renamed in August 2004 to ''Oracle BMW Racing'' to reflect the German company's role, and subsequently revised again to ''BMW Oracle Racing'' to reflect increased involvement from ''BMW''. The 2016 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, sponsored by Rolex and hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney, New South Wales, was the 72nd annual running of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. It began on Sydney Harbour at 1pm on Boxing Day (26 December 2016), before heading south for through the Tasman Sea, Bass Strait, Storm Bay and up the River Derwent, to cross the finish line in Hobart, Tasmania. 88 vessels started.
