Joyce Daniel
Joyce Daniel (1890 – 1985) created early birth control clinics in Wales for what is now named the Family Planning Association Life Alice Amelia Hyrons and Walter Lee, who was a church minister, had three daughters and Joyce was their last. She was educated in Kent before she took work in the banking industry in the West Midlands. She moved to Pontypridd in South Wales after she married a widower on 23 April 1918 where her husband and his son lived. Her husband was a solicitor and they had two sons in 1919 and 1922. Her husband's first wife had died in childbirth. Daniel came to the notice of Janet Chance because she organised the dispersian of maternity parcels which were donated by the Lord Mayor's Distress Fund. Janet Chance contacted her and told her of her failure to raise any support in the area to establish a birth control clinic in Pontypridd. Family Planning Association
The Family Planning Association (FPA) was a UK registered charity working to enable people to make informed choices about sex and to enjoy sexual health. It was the national affiliate for the International Planned Parenthood Federation in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1930, the FPA celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2010. Its motto was "''Talking sense about sex''". The charity was placed into liquidation on 15 May 2019, but the FPA name continues as a limited company selling sexual health resources. History The FPA was founded in 1930 when five birth control societies merged to form the National Birth Control Council (NBCC). Charles Vickery Drysdale FRSE was important during its foundation. Janet Chance
Janet Chance (10 February 1886 – 18 December 1953) was a British feminist writer, sex education advocate and birth control and abortion law reformer. Life Born in Edinburgh, Scotland to Scottish Calvinist minister and New College principal Alexander Whyte and Jane Elizabeth Barbour, Janet Whyte married successful chemical firm owner and stockbroker Clinton Frederick Chance in 1912. The couple soon moved to London, England where they both became enthusiastic advocates and financial supporters of the English Malthusian League and the efforts of American reformer Margaret Sanger and the birth control movement. Despite suffering from intermittent bouts of depression, Janet Chance threw herself into work becoming a member of the Workers' Birth Control Group (WBCG), founded in 1924 by birth control advocates Stella Browne and Dora Russell to give women wider access to birth control information. Marie Stopes
Marie Charlotte Carmichael Stopes (15 October 1880 – 2 October 1958) was a British author, palaeobotanist and campaigner for Eugenic feminism, eugenics and women's rights. She made significant contributions to plant palaeontology and coal classification, and was the first female academic on the faculty of the University of Manchester. With her second husband, Humphrey Verdon Roe, Stopes founded the first birth control clinic in Britain, which bore her name for Marie Stopes International, much of its 100 year history.
