Joyce Aiken
Joyce Aiken (born 1931) is an American feminist art historian, artist, and educator. Aiken taught the subject for over 20 years at California State University, Fresno, in Fresno, California and assisted her students in opening a feminist art gallery called Gallery 25. The gallery was one of the first feminist-focused art galleries in the country and helped launch Fresno to the forefront of the feminist art movement in the United States. Life and work Joyce Aiken earned both her bachelors and master's of art from California State University, Fresno. Aiken started teaching feminist art in 1973 at California State University, Fresno, taking over from fellow artist Judy Chicago, who had started the class in 1970. She taught the class until her retirement in 1992. In 1974, her students founded an alternative art gallery for women in Fresno, California called Gallery 25. The Pacific Design Center, or PDC, is a multi-use facility for the design community in West Hollywood, California. One of the buildings is often described as the ''Blue Whale'' because of its large size relative to surrounding buildings and its brilliant blue glass cladding. Fulton Mall (Fresno)
The Fulton Mall was a six-block corridor in downtown Fresno, California which was closed to traffic in 1964 and made into a pedestrians only mall. Despite opening to much fanfare, the downtown mall suffered from the city's suburban expansion, especially the opening of the Fashion Fair Mall six miles to the north. By the 1980s, most storefronts on the mall were empty and plans to renovate the mall were discussed. In 2017, car traffic was reintroduced to the street after most of the public art and amenities had been relocated to sidewalk areas. The mall was an early example of the design intent and masterplan-oriented thought process of shopping mall pioneer Victor Gruen, whose ideas were emulated, albeit in a modified form, across the United States.
