Joy Scouts
''Joy Scouts'' is a 1939 ''Our Gang'' short comedy film directed by Edward Cahn. It was the 180th ''Our Gang'' short (181st episode, 92nd talking short, 93rd talking episode, and 12th MGM produced episode) that was released. Plot Told that they are too young to join the Greenpoint Boy Scouts, the gang forms a troop of their own. Unfortunately, their camping and survival skills leave much to be desired. They pitch a tent over a well getting soaked; they burn the bacon, wieners, and fish they try to cook; get caught in a rainstorm, and get poison ivy. A flood traps the kids, but some real scouts come to the rescue. Notability ''Joy Scouts'' marked the debut of Mickey Gubitosi. Gubitosi would eventually adopt the screen name of Robert Blake several years later but continued to be known as Mickey on the series. Edward L. Cahn (February 12, 1899 – August 25, 1963) was an American film director. Early life and education Cahn was born in Brooklyn, New York. He went to work at Universal Pictures in 1917 while still a student at UCLA. Career He is best known for directing ''Our Gang'' comedies from 1939 to 1943, and a long line of other short subjects and B-movies afterward. He is also known for directing the 1958 film '' It! The Terror from Beyond Space'', the film that inspired the 1979 film '' Alien''. George Sidney
George Sidney (October 4, 1916May 5, 2002) was an American film director and producer who worked primarily at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. His work includes cult classics '' Bye Bye Birdie'' (1963) and ''Viva Las Vegas'' (1964). George McFarland (October 2, 1928 – June 30, 1993) was an American actor most famous for starring as a child as Spanky in the ''Our Gang'' series of short-subject comedies of the 1930s and 1940s. The ''Our Gang'' shorts were later syndicated to television as ''The Little Rascals''. Early life McFarland was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 2, 1928, to Virginia Winifred (née Phillips) and Robert Emmett McFarland. He had three siblings: Thomas ("Tommy", who appeared in a few ''Our Gang'' episodes as "Dynamite"), Amanda, and Roderick ("Rod"). He attended Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Texas.
