Joy (Joy Album)
''Joy'' is a jazz album by the group Joy that was originally released in 1976. It was re-released in May 2023 to positive reception. Background and release The group Joy was made up of members from the UK, US, Caribbean and South Africa. The musicians that played on the album were James Dvorak on trumpet, Frank Roberts on piano, Ernest Mothle on bass, Keith Bailey on drums, and Chris Francis on alto saxophone. Original release The recording session took place on 22 March 1976 at Chalk Farm Studio in London. The album was engineered by Vic Keary and the producer for the album was John Jack. The recording session was apparently subsidized by the Greater London Arts Association and done in a day. The album was originally released in 1976 on Cadillac (SGC 1006). Re-release The band's label, Cadillac Records got in touch with the surviving members of the band. Ernest Mothle, the South African musician who played bass, had since died. Joy is the state of being that allows one to experience feelings of intense, long-lasting happiness and contentment of life. It is closely related to, and often evoked by, well-being, success, or good fortune. Happiness, pleasure, and gratitude are closely related to joy but are not identical to it. Distinction vs similar emotions saw a clear distinction between joy, pleasure, and happiness: "I sometimes wonder whether all pleasures are not substitutes for Joy", and "I call it Joy, which is here a technical term and must be sharply distinguished both from Happiness and Pleasure. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Cadillac is a jazz record company and label in the United Kingdom. It has released recordings by notable jazz artists. It has been in operation since the early 1970s and continues info the present day. Background It was established in 1971 by John Jack and Mike Westbrook and its first release was in 1973. Jim Dvorak
James Peter Dvorak (born December 16, 1948, New York City) is an American jazz trumpeter. Background Dvorak received his bachelor's degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1970 and then relocated to England, where he lived for several decades. In the early 1970s he worked with Keith Tippett for the first time; the pair worked together again in the 1980s and 1990s. He played with Brotherhood of Breath from 1970 to 1975 and with a group called Joy around the same time, and played with Louis Moholo in the middle of the decade. He led his own groups from 1977 to 1982, first Sum Sum (with Elton Dean, Alan Skidmore, and Nick Evans), then Dhyana. In the 1980s he worked with Dudu Pukwana, Brian Abrahams, Keith Tippett, Maggie Nicols, and Ruthie Smith. In 1989 he joined the group In Cahoots, playing with them through most of the 1990s, and also worked with The Dedication Orchestra and with Marcio Mattos and Ken Hyder. Ernest Mothle
Ernest "Shololo" Mothle (2 December 1942 – 2 May 2011) was a South African jazz musician (performing in double bass, electric bass and vocals) and composer. Life and work He attended St. Peter's College in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, listening to music happening all around him in the bustling township. After briefly dreaming of playing the clarinet or saxophone (taking up the latter in his teens due to fooling around), he discovered his voice in music after turning to double bass. As a result, Mothle began playing with various musicians active in his home area of Tshwane. At college, he played in the Father Huddlestone Band with Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwangwa. In 1959, he found the vocal group Dominoes along with Francis and Cornelius Kekana and Gabriel Tladi. Keith Bailey (drummer)
Brian Albert Gordon Auger (born 18 July 1939) is an English jazz rock and rock keyboardist who specialises in the Hammond organ. Auger has worked with Rod Stewart, Tony Williams, Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Sonny Boy Williamson, Eric Burdon, and CAB. He has incorporated jazz, early British pop, R&B, soul music, and rock into his sound. He has been nominated for a Grammy Award. Career In 1965, Auger played on "For Your Love" by The Yardbirds as a session musician. He was brought in to play the Hammond organ, but settled for the only available keyboard, the harpsichord. That same year, Auger formed the group The Steampacket with Long John Baldry, Julie Driscoll, Vic Briggs, and Rod Stewart. Due to contractual problems there were no official recordings made by the band; nevertheless, nine tracks were laid down for promotional use in late 1965 and released as an LP in 1970 in France on the BYG label.
