''Journey to the Center of the Earth'' (released in the United Kingdom, UK as ''Journey to Middle Earth'') is a 2008 direct-to-DVD film created by The Asylum and directed by David Jones and Scott Wheeler. The film is a loose adaptation of the original 1864 novel ''Journey to the Center of the Earth'' by Jules Verne, but bears a close similarity to ''At the Earth's Core (novel), At the Earth's Core'', a similar 1914 novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is also the second film by The Asylum to be based on a Jules Verne novel, the first being ''30,000 Leagues Under the Sea''. A mockbuster, it was released to capitalize on the higher-budgeted Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008 theatrical film), film of the same title starring Brendan Fraser. The Asylum is an American independent film company and distributor that focuses on producing low-budget, direct-to-video films. It is notorious for producing titles that capitalize on productions by major studios, often using film titles and scripts very similar to those of current blockbusters in order to lure customers. These titles have been dubbed " mockbusters" by the press. Its titles are distributed by Echo Bridge Home Entertainment, GT Media, and as of 2015, Cinedigm. The studio is best known for producing the '' Sharknado film series'' and the Syfy original series '' Z Nation''. History The Asylum was founded by director David Michael Latt and former Village Roadshow executives David Rimawi and Sherri Strain in 1997.
