The ''Journal of Parasitology'' is a peer-reviewed medical journal covering research on parasites published bimonthly by Allen Press on behalf of the American Society of Parasitologists. Content includes research articles, brief research notes, announcements of the society, and book reviews. It was founded and edited by Henry Baldwin Ward in 1914. History In 1911, Charles C. Stiles and Brayton H. Ransom at the Bureau of Animal Industry in Washington, D.C., promulgated the need for parasitology journal in America. They asked Henry Baldwin Ward, at the time professor of zoology at the University of Illinois, to initiate the production. Parasitology
Parasitology is the study of parasites, their host (biology), hosts, and the relationship between them. As a List of biology disciplines, biological discipline, the scope of parasitology is not determined by the organism or environment in question but by their way of life. This means it forms a synthesis of other disciplines, and draws on techniques from fields such as cell biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, evolution and ecology. Founded in 1924, the ''American Society of Parasitologists'' comprises a diverse group of about 500 scientists from academia, industry, and government involved in the study and teaching of the scientific discipline of parasitology. Henry Baldwin Ward
Henry Baldwin Ward (4 March 1865 – 30 November 1945) was an American zoologist and parasitologist. He was the founder and first president of The American Society of Parasitologists, and founder-editor of the ''Journal of Parasitology.'' Biography Ward was born on March 4, 1865, in Troy, New York. His father, Richard Halsted Ward, was a professor of biology at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He got his bachelor's degree from Williams College of Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1885. He became an instructor of Science at Troy High School, where he served from 1886 to 1888. For two years, from 1888 to 1980, he participated in postgraduate study in European universities in cities like Göttingen, Freiburg, and Leipzig, and in biological facilities at Naples, Heligoland, and Villefranche-sur-Mer. Bureau Of Animal Industry
President Chester A. Arthur signed the Animal Industry Act23 STAT 31 on May 29, 1884 creating the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), an organization that was established under the United States Department of Agriculture. It replaced the Veterinary Division that had been created by the Commissioner of Agriculture in 1883, which had taken over for the Treasury Cattle Commission, Department of Treasury. The BAI was charged with preventing diseased animals from being used as food. Congress created the Bureau to promote livestock disease research, enforce animal import regulations, and regulate the interstate movement of animals. In the years to follow, positions were created within BAI to support inspection activities at U.S. ports of entry.
