José Gusmão
José Guilherme Figueiredo Nobre de Gusmão (born 20 July 1976) is a Portuguese politician formerly serving as a Member of the European Parliament for the Left Bloc from 2019 until 2024. Biography Gusmão was born in 1976. He is the son of writer and politician Manuel Gusmão and the half-brother of politician commentator Daniel Oliveira (they both share the same mother). A member of the Left Bloc, he was first elected as a deputy from Santarém in 2009. He ran for re-election in 2011, but failed. In 2019, he was elected as a MEP along with Marisa Matias. Left Bloc (Portugal)
The Left Bloc ( , BE), colloquially shortened as O Bloco, is a political party in Portugal. A left-wing populist and democratic socialist party, it has been described as left-wing to far-left. It is currently led by Mariana Mortágua. History Formation and early history The Left Bloc was formed in 1999 by the merger of the Marxist People's Democratic Union, Trotskyist Revolutionary Socialist Party, and the democratic socialist Politics XXI. 2009 Portuguese Legislative Election
The 2009 Portuguese legislative election was held on 27 September, to renew all 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic. In these elections there were approximately 9.5 million Portuguese at home and abroad called to determine the 230 seats in the Assembleia da República and 18th constitutional government in Portugal after 1976. The election took place during the regular end of the previous four-year legislative period. From 2005 to 2009, the Socialist Party (PS), led by José Sócrates, governed with an absolute majority. The opinion polls at the beginning of the official election campaign on 12 September 2009, showed a too close to call race between the Socialists and the conservative Social Democrats, but just days before the election the Socialists increased their lead over the Social Democrats. Marisa Matias
Marisa Isabel dos Santos Matias (born 20 February 1976) is a Portuguese sociologist and politician. She is a member of the Assembly of the Republic since 2024. She was also a Member of the European Parliament, between 2009 and 2024. She currently seated on the Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) and Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committees. She was also Chairwoman of the Delegation of the European Parliament for relations with the Mashreq countries (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria). Between 2010 and 2016 she was Vice-President of the Party of the European Left. In November 2015, Matias announced her candidacy for the 2016 Portuguese presidential elections, representing the Left Bloc party. She finished 3rd, with 10,12% of the votes, the best result ever achieved by a woman in a presidential election in Portugal at the time. 2019 European Parliament Election In Portugal
An election was held in Portugal on Sunday, 26 May 2019, to elect the Portuguese delegation to the European Parliament from 2019 to 2024. This was the eighth European Parliament election held in Portugal. The Socialist Party (PS) was the winner of the election, scoring 33.4 percent of the vote. The party increased their share of the votes by 2 percentage points from the 2014 election, and won an additional seat. It was one of the only three times in Portuguese history where the government party won a European election. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) achieved its worst results ever as a standalone party, with 21.9 percent of the vote, distancing more than eleven points from the winner.
