Ernesto Balmaceda Bello (February 27, 1887 – February 24, 1906) was a Chilean diplomat, who was murdered in Belgium in a celebrated case that came to define diplomatic privileges and immunities for the retinue and families of diplomatic staff. He was of Basque descent. Early life He was born in Santiago, the son of José Rafael Balmaceda Fernández and of Ana Bello Codesido. By birth, he was the son of a former Minister of the Interior, great-grandson of Andrés Bello and nephew to President José Manuel Balmaceda. José Rafael del Carmen Balmaceda Fernández (August 23, 1850 – August 7, 1911) was a Chilean politician, diplomat and brother of President José Manuel Balmaceda. He was of Basque descent. Early life He was born in Renca, the son of Manuel José Balmaceda Ballesteros and of Encarnación Fernández Salas. He completed his studies at the Instituto Nacional and then attended the University of Louvain, where he graduated with a doctorate in Political Science. Early in his life he dedicated most of his time to his Hacienda San José in Puente Alto. Carlos Balmaceda Saavedra (April 8, 1879, Santiago, Chile – August 21, 1958) was a Chilean agricultural engineer, businessman and politician, member of the Liberal Democratic Party. He served as a congressman during the 1900s and 1910s, as well as Minister of State under the governments of Presidents Pedro Montt, Carlos Ibáñez del Campo and Juan Esteban Montero.
