José Bernabé Gutiérrez
José Bernabé Gutiérrez Parra (born December 21, 1952) is a Venezuelan politician who served as Governor of Amazonas from 1996 to 2001, and Senator representing Amazonas from 1994 and 1996. He was a notable leader of Democratic Action (AD) in the last years of Venezuela's bipartisan democracy. In 2020 he was appointed by the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) as chair of AD and currently leads the pro-government version of the party. Career In 1994 he was elected Senator of the now extinct Congress of Venezuela representing Amazonas. He left his seat in the Senate when he became governor of Amazonas in the 1995 election. He was re-elected in 1998. He was declared winner of the 2000 elections against leftist Liborio Guarulla by a small margin, but later the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) ordered to repeat the election in polling places where some irregularities were found. Amazonas (Venezuelan State)
Amazonas State (, ) is one of States of Venezuela, the 23 states into which Venezuela is divided. It covers nearly a fifth of the area of Venezuela, but has less than 1% of Venezuela's population. The state capital is Puerto Ayacucho. The capital until the early 1900s was San Fernando de Atabapo. Although named after the Amazon River, most of the state is drained by the Orinoco River. Amazonas State covers 176,899 km2 and, in 2007, had a population of 142,200. Its density is 0.8 inhabitants per km2. Amazonas has Venezuela's highest proportion of Indigenous peoples in Venezuela, indigenous peoples of Venezuela; these make up only around 1.5% of the population nationwide, but the proportion is nearly 50% in Amazonas. The Congress of the Republic, also known as the National Congress, represented the Venezuelan Legislative Branch until 1999. It had a bicameral composition: a Chamber of Senators (or Senate) and a Chamber of Deputies. The last president of the Chamber of Senators (who, in turn, served as President of Congress) was Luis Alfonso Dávila, elected senator in the State of Anzoátegui by the Socialist-leaning party Movimiento Quinta República; the last president of the Chamber of Deputies (who also served as Vice President of Congress) was Henrique Capriles Radonski, who was elected deputy in the State of Zulia by the Christian Socialist party COPEI.
